Koki Kameda vs David De la Mora

    113-114

I started watching this around seven hours ago and only got it finished with now. A really good fight that I scored the exact same as I had the first time I watched it, and an extremely close one to boot. Plenty of swing rounds and a few momentum shifts also.

Kameda started off very quickly in the opening two rounds - easily blocking/evading the vast majority of DDLM's wild swings before jumping in with his own spiteful counter punches and skipping out of range - before an absolutely bat**** mental third round. De la Mora had Kameda on ***** Street courtesy of a big right hand and follow-up assault, before an on the button left hand caught DDLM blind and dropped him heavy. Upon rising he proceeded to go to war with Koki and actually get the better of it. I was considering scoring the round a 10-9 but I bitched out of it, I'd be interested in seeing the opinions of everyone on it though if they wouldn't mind watching it(I'll post the fight below). De la Mora certainly got the better of it before and after getting dropped, but I was unsure on just how dominant one must be in order to change that 8 to a 9.

They then began to exchange rounds after this as Kameda began to increasingly fatigue, his output dwindling more and more as he started to absorb a lot of punishment to his arms(I had it 4-2 to DDLM from rounds 4-9). Most of these middle rounds were tricky, as how each fighter scored varied. DDLM had a vastly higher punch output from what I could see, but very few shots landed all that cleanly, instead either hitting Koki's arms or puncturing his guard and landing a fraction of the punches he threw in combinations. Whereas Kameda was far more minimalist in his work, but when he landed it was often cleanly, though very rarely did he actually follow through with his blows, and thus decreasing the effect of them. I really try to make a point of scoring body shots just as much as I do ones to the head though, and when it came to those it was a whole different story for De la Mora, who was very accuarate and effective with them.

It paid dividends later on, as I thought he swept the final three by drowning a gassed Kameda in a sea of punches. Koki's arms looked much heavier by this stage, even when his work rate started to drop earlier on, there was still a lot of snap behind what he did let go. But this wasn't the case anymore, there was a noticeable lack of the sharpness behind his counters from earlier on and despite trying to show some machismo by gesturing to DDLM that he wanted to go to war, the Mexican was still the only dude in there letting big shots go consistently.

As I say though, very debatable. Would be interesting to see if anyone else here has scored the fight too.

Kameda's a decent fighter, nothing special though. He's best suited as a counter-puncher, but I think he needs to work on enhancing his movement, because as strong and water-tight as his guard is, getting it belted constantly only tires him out down the stretch. It completely nullifies his offense too, as he goes from being quick and deceptively powerful in the early going to lethargic and ineffective by the end.

De la Mora's alright, he gets by on sheer grit for the most part though, at least at this level he does anyways. He's up against Anselmo Moreno next as what I consider to be a reward for his effort, and I think he'll give a decent account of himself. If his punches were a bit more compact I could even see him winning, but as it stands I think he'll struggle to land much, and he's not defensively responsible enough when he's pressing the fight to really get up close and out-hustle Moreno before getting clocked himself.

EDIT: I've only just realised how long this post is. I got disgracefully carried away here. Just typed as I thought. Won't be doing that again.:yep:patsch

How amazing was Sumbu first time round? I felt he won the 2nd as well, and as it was more competitive and ended up one of the best two-way technical battles of all time.

I've seen the 1st fight many times, an absolute masterclass & one of the best performances on film.

The 2nd fight was very close, Mike bossed the 1st half & as he slowed Kalambay took over & dominated the 2nd half. I scored it 6-5-1 McCallum but there were several close rounds in another great fight.

The Graham fight was fairly close as well, the point deduction ended up being cruicial, Watson was a brutal fight.

The 2 Toney fights are impossible to score :conf

I'm gonna do a McCallum encyclopedia post

    Good stuff :good

That's an entirely justifiable card. I had it to Kalambay by a few points when I first watched it, then Mike by two and then Kalambay by two the third time. The first is one of the great filmed performances I agree, but I love the second fight, two rounded fighters of the highest technical calibre really going for it for 12 rounds.

Kalambay's defence gets sharper as the fight goes on after an uncharacteristic taking the reigns early by 'The Body Snatcher'. So many close rounds. Brilliant, brilliant fight.

Have you seen McCallum vs Yonker?

Mike is old (37) & slow, 20 lbs above his best weight but he takes this kid to school & stops him in 5. The bodyshots he drops him with are vintage McCallum, its a great fight to watch.

Watched Danny Lopez vs Sal Sanchez.

Great fight. Amazing to see Sanchez in his youth. I can think of few fighters who could completely dominate and outclass an excellent fighter like Lopez. But Sanchez just took him apart. Landing almost at will with huge punches, and neutralising everything Lopez tried to do. All of Sal best qualities werer on display that night, good defense, movement, hand speed, power and a gresat chin. Lopez showed some to in taking 13 rounds of punishment.

Lopez is one of the most entertaining fighters ever . Just constant action in almost all his fights. Hes become one of my favourite fighters to watch. Salvador was such a beast in his day to, could have been a P4P top 5 ATG imo. Going to watch his fight with Juan Laporte next.

    Moruti Mthalane Vs Zolani Tete

I was keeping tabs on Tete a few years back, when he was touted as quite the puncher. He had a blood clot or passed out or something and that stalled him for a bit, and may also explain why he was rushed into this 'title' fight against the more experienced and tidy operator Mthelane, who most know for losing to Donaire.

Tete looks as advertised early, but his injury may be easily explained, as he's massive for the weight. He's a pretty sharp punching southpaw, and throws a lovely left uppercut from the outside, and his arsenal looks primed to land on a straight-up fighter like Mthelane. He takes the first few rounds.

But from 3 to 5, the titlist shows what he's made of, persistently stalking his rangy challenger and exposing his movement as fluff rather than constructive application. Tete looks increasingly vulnerable as Mthelane times his right hand more frequently, and gets hurt and outclassed towards the end of round 4 and throughout 5, gamely firing back but getting stopped after a sustained assault.

As for Mthelane, he's basic but does what he does well, and is ready for Marquez/Viloria. Tete was good enough on first watch, but his seemly diverse southpaw attack becomes predictable within a few rounds, and he lacked the nous to move himself out of trouble, and was easily hunted down by the class, but straightforward, Mthelane.

I believe he lost again recently, what happened there 'Pab?
