WHEN fighters step into the ring with Father Dave Smith, theyre usually hesitant to throw the first punch - until he connects with one. Next month at least 30 boxers, from champion Anthony Mundine to novice John Safran, will face that challenge when the pugilist priest attempts to break the world record for the most continuous rounds of boxing by going the knuckle on Palm Sunday. The parish priest at the Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Dulwich Hill aims to box 120 rounds of three minutes over eight hours on Sunday, April 1. Father Dave, 50, is aiming to raise $10,000 for the churchs youth drop-in centre which he has been running since 1994. The centre brings together young people from the community and rehabilitates those with drug and alcohol issues through boxing. Mundine and his father Tony and radio personality Safran and female boxer Lauryn Eagle are some of names entering the ring. But Father Smith is still looking for more people to face a round against the fighting priest on Palm Sunday. When I started fighting, people would say I cant hit the father and stuff like that, Father Smith said. But Id start hitting them and theyd quickly change their mind. Since then he estimates the church has raised close to $1 million through boxing events to keep the centre running. FIGHT FILE ■ Last year Father Smith fought 60 continuous rounds, but wants to break the Guinness World Record. ■ The official record is 25 rounds, but he wants to beat the unofficial record of 111. ■ Father Dave staged his first charity bout in 1996. The church needed to raise $1000 for the centre, but the fight night ended up raising $50,000.
