People slag Froch's resume of by calling Taylor and Abraham blown up middleweights and that he has been found out at world level but who did Hatton actually ever beat? An aging kostya Tszyu A blown up and past it Castillo Juan Urango was very limited His two biggest fights against Pacman and Floyd he got knocked out in. So did Hatton actually ever have any top level wins and was he as good as people make out??? I've done this thread purely because people slag off Froch and his resume.
I would still count the win over Tszyu as a quality one. A bit of help from the ref in that one, maybe, but I don't think there were any signs during the actual fight that Tszyu was "shot". He just got grounded down by a high energy attack from Hatton. A few decent/good names at LWW, in the context of the strength of the division at that time, and a close battle with Collazo which could have been scored either way. I don't give Hatton any plaudits for "fighting the best" in PBF and Pac, which many on here do. He was getting paid shitloads of money for both fights, and performed worse against both than many lesser known fighters did.
I'm not sure too many people slag off Froch's resume. Anyway, Hatton beat a pretty good Paulie who was the second best in the division, Kosta was the favourite going in so it has to be counted as a good victory, he won every round against Urango (when Alexander knocked him out he was touted as the next best thing). Tackie, Magee and Smith were good domestic wins.* He got lucky against Collazo tho IMO. Having Said that, he was a lineal champion at 140, and picked up a belt at 147. He was knocked out by two of the three best fighters of the generation (Hopkins being the other great IMO), that makes him a pretty good fighter.
Ok on a serious note. Froch fights live competition more often and faces the risk of loss more than Hatton did, but I will say that Hatton was better than Froch is, at least in his prime anyway. But yes, the thread point is valid, Ricky Hatton does not have a great resume. It's not bad or anything, he beat the man who was the lineal champ, regardless of the point in his career he was at, Tszyu was the true champ, so the right thing to do is to gun for his head, so there is no case to be made for that not being a good win. The era just before Ricky really rose to prominence was better at 140, that was a really good era for the division.
:think IF he was, then it wasnt by a long way, and he sure didnt prove it against live opposition. Struggling against Collazo, Urango etc is worse than struggling with Jermain Taylor imo.
Collazo was at 147 pounds, I said prime/peak Hatton. And yeah I agree though, it's not by much, but he was better than Froch is, Hatton was the clear cut top 140 pound man in the world for a period, and Froch loses, he actually loses to other world class fighters, which is worse than struggling. It;s subjective, because as we've both said, Froch does fight live competition more often than Hatton did, but to be brutally honest I think it's pretty blatant just by watching them on film that Hatton was better in his prime than Froch is/has been. And I hate no fighter more than Ricky Hatton, I'm just being unbiased. I hate that twat.
Hatton had already peaked by the time he fought Tszyu. His most impressive/devastating performances came in the WBU reign - obviously some of the opponents were ****, but his shut out wins over Phillips and Tackie were easily more impressive than the 12 round hugging of Urango, who would probably have lost to either of those. If more risks had been taken between 2002-05 his record would look much better. Similar numbers, but better names. He certainly had the right grounding from turning pro up to winning the British title, fighting very regularly over those first three years. I agree with Teeto, Froch has the better resume (win or lose against Bute) but Hatton was probably the better of the two, certainly in most departments.
that has nothing to do with the thread title though, the discussion is of who he beat yes he gets credit for getting paid **** loads for fighting the best fighters in the world whilst finding it funny to starve out his number one contender of his well deserved title shot and the money which could change his life and liquidity ratio, loads of credit, what a nice guy, man of the people
yeah, I don't even think it's a departments thing that needs analysing in that vein, he's just better than him on an effectiveness level, you could even say Froch is more versatile than Hatton, but Hatton was just better than him, I think it's crazy blatant
