Gerrie Coetzee was often referred to as having a "bionic" right hand. He had some type of surgery on it but I'm not sure exactly what.

Yes, I think It is Gerrie Coetzee is who you are thinking about. He had a bad hand that was operated on quite a lot and they just called it his "bionic" hand. Don't think it was actually any improvement on the original fist.
Coetzee is guy who you are thinking of. He had hand surgery, it dod not give him "bionic fist," although they sometimes said that when referring to him, it did make for good stories for writers,and publicity too. It also was used as excuse by some guys to duck him. He had broken hand, they fused it differently was story. It did not make it a super hand though.
