How good was Hagler's power?

Hagler was right handed who fought southpaw.

If he had spent his entire career as conventional...he probably would have developed that last bit of power he lacked......power like Cyclone Hart or Florentino Fernandez.

Hagler, the natually bigger fighter, really never "hurt" the smaller Duran.

It would have been interesting to see if a 154 lb Benetiz would have been a "mystery" to Hagler also.

 

He sacrificed power for accuracy, like the intelligent boxer that he was.

Of course he "could" hit harder but would prefer guaranteed accumulation over possible connection.

 

Hagler was a very good fighter but not great. He is one of the most overrated fighters of all time. His punching power was decent. He did not have exceptional punching power. Middleweights like Eduardo Lausse and Julian Jackson and Florentino Fernandez and Mugabi were great punchers. Hagler's power was way below the level of these guys.

 

No, Hagler hit harder and put more into it than Whitaker. Maybe if Whitaker committed he could have the knockouts, but Marvin was stronger than Pernell and just his build alone shows he would be a harder hitter. Pernell did not have a punchers build. A lot of people will say that is nonsense, what is a punchers build. Well there is something to it. Hard punchers usually have bigger shoulders and are built up high.

He posted those videos to back up his claim that Hagler had brutal power. All I was doing was saying I could post 4 or 5 Whitaker videos with similar KO's. I stated that Whitaker took out Nazario with one punch for a full 10 count knockout. However, I wasn't trying to say that Hagler wasn't a good puncher and Whitaker was.

Perhaps you could show me the Whitaker KO's you are referring to ... these were all against highly ranked fighters or in the case of Caveman Lee a basty slugger ,,, I appreciate the point you are trying to make but we can spin anything .. my point is that when he went to slug Marvin could crush a guy ...

To answer OP, Hagler would rather back one down with his stiff jab and punish them. He had some brutal ko's but was an educated worker in the ring.

 

Whitaker was no big puncher, but his left hand was underrated, and could do serious damage. I think a lot of it has do with accuracy, timing, not seeing a punch coming, etc...I mean, no one will say that James Toney was a bigger puncher in his divisions than George Foreman was, but he has more one-punch KOs (or fights that were essentially over after one great shot).

Wow way too predictable ...you actually went for that route ... LOL .. fringe contenders do not compare with the guys I showed Hagler destroying ... Hamsho had a concrete chin .. Hearns was one of the best fighters in the world, Saeles was an Olympic and a top contender....
