I'm relatively new to boxing (first started really paying attention around mid-to-late Roy Jones Jr prime, if that makes any sense lol).

I can remember RJJ 'ducking' certain fighters. So basically my earliest memories of being a 'hard-core' boxing fan, there is always 'ducking' or atleast 'avoiding' going on.

My question is, when did that kind of thing really start? Has it always happened? Is it something that just started with RJJ lol? Because I know they didn't atleast in the 80's.... atleast with Duran/Hearns/Leonard/Hagler.

And after thinking about it a little more before I clicked 'Submit', people say Leonard kind of ducked Hagler, then came out of retirement to fight him when he thought he could beat him (if thats true or not, who knows).

Yep, boxing is a business. They weigh the reward against the risk.

Sugar Ray Robinson didn't want to fight Charley Burley.

Jack Johnson didn't want to fight other Duquans.

People don't fight as frequently today, so it's harder to "fight everyone".

Charley Burley was a Slick Black American Counter-punching MASTER but wasn't a big draw.

you remember how godly and highly regarded a prime Roy Jonez was? Burley was the prizefighter they compared him to.

Archie Moore thought Burley was the greatest ever. Eddie Futch said Burley was the finest he's ever seen.

Lennox Lewis. He threw his title in a trash can.
