While ducking has (of course) always existed, I'd say it exploded when the "alphabet soup" list of governing bodies came into being.

In the old WBC-only days, you were either the champ or you weren't. Today, ~10 guys have a "champ" belt in each division, which helps the promoters push them & draw casual fans. Why take a chance fighting someone really good, when you're already "champ?"

I gave a prime example. One that is relevant to the landscape of the sport at this precise moment.

John L. Sullivan ducked every black fighter in existence at the time, so did other white HW champs till Tommy Burns finally gave Johnson a shot (albeit after giving him the runaround) and got his azz whooped

Jack Johnson ducked the Langford rematch

    2 of the earliest duckings

ducking has been there as long as the sport has

I did make a thread on earliest cherrypicking which turned out interesting

since the bareknuckle days! In the early 1700's there's stories of fighters avoiding certain styles and certain fighters who weren't popular enough...I bet if you dug hard enough you'd find evidence of ducking as far back as the greeks in 500 BC although some of those ****ers were forced to fight to the death with spiiked handwraps so maybe not, they proly had to fight who they were told but I bet the matchmakers ducked and maneuvered their charges away from bad style match ups etc...

probably since the beginning of the sport

you get a champ people like and can expand the popularity so you dont put him in tough in every title fight maybe avoid the best guy

i mean for the longest time none of the champs would defend their title vs blacks and probably other minorities

some of this is just guessing and talking from my ass but its probably been done forever

Ducking started becoming prominent way back when PPV started to make big dollars. Late 80s. The image of a boxer became more important than the fights he fought. Undefeated records, even if they are against crappy opponents, makes a boxer more marketable than someone who takes risks and fights the best and loses some fights. It's sad.

Since the Devil ducked God and tried to make a side deal with Jesus.
But now the devil is more popular than ever thanks to his new promoter.

His promoter is also the reason that Armageddon is not happening.
