Lewis won the first fight legitimately... The fighters don't always determine when the match is over.. The refs, cornerman and ringside doctors do... Lewis, despite being 37 years of age, 12 months out of the ring and a career high 256 lbs, opened up a gash that is one of the most viewed images on google today... As for the rematch, well if Vitali needed a second chance to beat a man who was as far past it as Lewis was, then he probably didn't deserve it in the first place..

 

Lewis was fortunate getting the TKO over Vitali, I think he knew his chances would be slim in a rematch and I think he knew Vitali could take a great punch....I think Lewis was sure his chances were slim in a rematch with Vitali's confidence soaring, I can not think of any other reason he would have turned down 30 million

I think you are right. In addition, Vitlai took the match with Lewis on less than 2 weeks notice. If Vitali had a full camp, I think he comes in sharper and in better shape.


The first match will go down as a ring classic. What is seldom mentioned is match really enhanced both guys from a resume standpoint. Vitali was the most formidable fighter Lewis meet in the ring...better than a declining Holyfield or a shot Tyson. Lewis was also the most formidable fighter Vitlai meet, and he was up 4-2 on all three cards prior to the cuts stoppage.


If Vitali would have stopped Lewis early people who have said Lewis was too old to perform well, and dogged him once again for an unreliable chin. If Lewis was up 4-2 some might say Vitlai wasn't a top level boxer.

 

I was rooting for Vitali back than and was angry when the fight was stopped. But yeah, Lennox deserved it. Vitali looked horrible cut up. Good decision to stop it. And 1 round more or less wouldn´t have changed anything. Lennox already turned the tide and won the last two rounds.

lennox won fair and square and would of won a re-match . vitali is a good fighter but he was/is not on the same level as lewis

 

Lennox was a true great who retired fighting the top contenders ranked number 1. The reason Vit's ATG status isnt really there yet is that he is going into retirement fighting unranked bums (Mormeck).

The comparison is not even close.
