Tell me what you think of this video on the hook:

I think it's one of the best I've seen. And the power is amazing.

I like how he also shows the bending of the front knee as he sits down and rotates.

It's definitely a correct explanation. His pivot is key, from the foot through the hips and upper body.

Good tutorial, but the weight doesn't stay on the front foot as he says the weight should transfer onto the rear leg- as he occasionally accidentally demonstrated in his technique

It's the most crucial element of the hook.

Aside from the pivot, I agree; without it, there's no balance and no follow through. What's interesting is when fighters, while in motion, step over while hooking, and get similar thrust; or even more, fighters like Frazier who recommend planting the foot flat on the ground and trying to generate torque that way. I guess different styles and experiences make for different applications, but the way it's shown in the video is the fundamental way that will work 99% of the time for anyone trying to learn to box.

The purpose of the pivot is transference of weight no?

Interesting. Looking at it from that point, I don't think I tranfer weight to the back foot as much as I should.

Which is why it confuses me that Frazier insists on planting it. :conf

I guess he's efficient in the weight transfer by some other means in his hip turn.

Watch the Ali knockdown, fraziers lead leg is off the floor= transference from left to right.

Just because you do something well doesn't mean you can express or break it down correctly, and visa versa which answers the question above

In reading Frazier's book, it seems to me that he advocates throwing a left hook by pushing off the left foot, if that is the correct term, and generating power that way, not by transferring weight to the right leg.
Getting that weight onto the right leg is what sets you up to throw a right hand behind the hook. You can accomplish that, without a pivot on the front foot, by sliding the right foot directly to the right, even an inch, when you throw the left hook.

That makes much more sense :good People can generally have a hard time explaining what they're doing even if they do it well, but stepping over does seem to transfer the weight much like other fighters do, as I mentioned before.
