I had read 6am EST (7pm Tokyo) which is about normal for Japanese cards.

Cheers for the result, quite a big shock in all honesty.

Yeah, I'm still trying to process it.

Bigger upset than Jaro vs. Wonjongkam?

    :rofl:rofl

Not as big of an upset as Jaro-Wonjongkam, but still pretty surprising. I was expecting Sato to lose a lopsided decision, but I guess that's boxing for you. Can't wait to see the fight, sounds like it was a good one.

So, how many world champs does Japan have now? Koki Kameda, Takahiro Aoh, Toshiaki Nishioka, Takeshi Uchiyama, Shinsuke Yamanaka, Tomonobu Shimizu, Akira Yaegashi, Kazuto Ioka, and now Yota Sato? And isn't Chris John fighting some Japanese guy in April or May? Might want to keep an eye on that one the way things have been going lately in the Asia/Pacific region.

Props to all of you for staying current on the smaller weight fighters, something I find very difficult to do despite my best intentions. More of this and less of the usual banter would be good for these boards.

No way! It was a huge upset but Jaro was mean't to be a punching bag for Pong while Sato was a decent opponent for Chokchai.

    That's true...

...err, I don't really think anyone was expecting that. :yep Most people were guessing like a 120-108 rout by Suri.

This had "gimme defense" written all over it. After beating Rojas and Nashiro in very impressive fashion, this was supposed to be Chokchai's relatively easygoing night at the office...:!: Especially with rumors that Sato was weight drained and never having stepped up beyond domestic level before.

I, too, thought this fight would be easy for Suriyan, but Sato isn't a push-over and from what I can gather had a decent gameplan heading into the fight. From what I could understand using Google Translate on some Japanese articles, Sato apparently sparred over 300 rounds in preparation, including with minimumweight champion Akira Yaegashi, who is similar in size to Suriyan. He's also nearly 5-8 and has a decent jab, so perhaps he was able to utilize his height and reach better than anyone had expected? Obviously we won't know until the fight is posted on YouTube.

Sato was moving around the ring the first minute or so in pretty much every round, scroring with a quick jab and 1-2's. that made it difficult to connect for Suriyan who was just too wide with his punches and has t-rex arms anyway. once he landed something they fought toe to toe for the rest of the round. Suriyan had Sato stunned couple of time too but Sato also knew how to tie him up if he had to and also had growing success on the inside himself as the fight went into the later rounds. it was very competitive and the knockdows were the deciding factor pretty much..
theres already a vid up on youtube that shows some rounds and starts with the third

Really? I thought it was a competitive fight on paper. Sato is ranked number 7 by The Ring at the weight, number 5 by boxrec. (Suri is ranked 2 and 5 by those two respectively), I haven't seen Sato fight before admittedly, but it seemed like a good fight going by that, nowhere near as big an upset as Jaro/ Pong, Hope /Proska.

The Japanese guys are on fire at the moment.
