Which weight class historically has always been the most competetive?

Welterweight.

 

Welterweight. Probably has the largest number of competitors that fit weight wise under the 147 limit. Or perhaps middleweight.

Boxrec has the total number of registered pro's for each weightclass, however, I am too lazy to look them up.

Excluding Heavyweight? Of the original 8 the Heavyweights are in contention for dead last.

Anyways, you can't go wrong with either Lightweight, Welterweight, or Middleweight. Those are the indisputable top 3, though.

Lightweight has been the strongest division historically, at least in terms of ATG fighters. Duran, Leonard, Gans, Whitaker, Williams and Canzoneri all had distinguished tenures at 135. Many division-hoppers like Armstrong, McLarnin, Ross, Chavez, Arguello, De La Hoya and Mayweather arguably peaked at that weight. Throw in long reigning champs like Ortiz, Brown and Mosley, and the likes of Camacho, Rosario, Jack, Battling Nelson, Laguna, Buchanan, Castillo and Marquez, and the division has a hell of a history.

 

welterweight or lightweight.....these are the only weight classes where in every era there is more than one great fighter at the weight, greaT P4P fighters at these weights and we've had great featherweights try lightweight and lightweights move to welter....IMO from 135-147 have always had the best fighters, fights, and competition

It's kinda the threshold between the little guys and the big guys. Plus, I think more ATG's have made a name at 147 than anywhere else.

Middleweight is also up there I think.
