Oh no. Here we go again with another of contemporary boxing's greatest myths. The "Oscar's Jab in the Floyd fight" myth. Oscar did not have Floyd figured out with a jab, nor did he win more rounds. Floyd took Oscar's jab and put it in his pocket.

DLH's jab gave him a foothold in the fight, a chance.

That's as far as it went.

I know you don't need to be punching to walk someone down. But my point is, if Mayweather has little to offer in terms of offense...how is able to 'walk' opponents down, or back them up? I didn't claim he was superman, I offered debate to your statements...it's nothing out of the ordinary at all, it does show variety in a fighter though, especially in terms of footwork and balance.

There are major differences in boxing going forwards, and boxing going backwards...this in itself is variety. The majority of boxers are comfortable only doing either one, and are ok at doing the other.

Balance is a major part, the transfer of momentum and drive are also key. Driving off the front foot to go backwards, rotating/pivoting off the front foot...driving across your body using the front foot. Going forwards, driving off the back foot to get in to range (not having the option to wait for your opponent the majority of the time), anticipating your opponents movement and punches (especially Mayweather's style)...and also the ability to cut off the ring using little energy.

There are some major differences in fighting going forwards, and some subtle ones like I mentioned above...and that isn't even taking in to account punches.

Mayweather is not a complete fighter. He does know how to put them together though, WHEN he needs to.

I know someone who spends the summer in Mayweather's gym, he states that the videos you see of Mayweather training, the majority of them are all for show. Like many have assumed and suspected I guess.

It's not really a gaping hole, especially when he hasn't been pushed for years. A gaping hole of Mayweather's is one particular defensive movement. On occasion, he over exaggerates his block/parry to his body...very evident in the Mosley bout, and on a couple of other occasions. Transfer from body to head, and you just might catch him at the right time he over exaggerates that defense.

You're going back years for the last time Mayweather maybe should have targeted the body more.

Why do you think his opponents tire down the stretch? (this is a slight over exaggeration on my part) Why do you think their output drops?

Combine this lacking body work with his ability to make his opponents miss, and you have your answer. Mayweather does very little in the clinch, bar that sneaky uppercut to the midsection, this is because he lets his opponent waste energy whilst he conserves. Of course he could go to the body more, and he does when he has his opponent rolling...but like I have said above, the work he does is surprisingly effective.

Well no, it doesn't. His guard revolves around the shoulder roll, he has many other defensive options like I stated.

Mayweather's work is effective for him :conf

So your excuse from the Castillo fight is an injury, go figure.

You say nobody was good enough to make him let his hands go, excuse me?? Castillo ?? Oscar?? Like I said if Floyd was a good combination puncher, or had a better offense those fights would not have been close or that competitive. The Oscar fight went to an SD, you can say that it wasn't as close as the judges saw it but guess what, that's Floyd fault for relying on POTSHOTING instead of putting his hands together. So yes, it is a flaw, a big one. Ask Roy Jones about that. You don't think his inability to put punches together late in his career had something to do with those losses??

Look if Floyd was so versatile he would have let his hands go more against Castillo, and Oscar. That's what a COMPLETE fighter would have done in those situations. You say he's never been forced to let his hands go, well Castillo forced him, and Floyd *couldn't do it.* That's called an inconsistently, or being exposed. It doesn't mean he's a bad fighter it just shows he isn't perfect.

Pacquiao style doesnt revolve around a striaght left. That's his best punch but he throws a million other punches, hooks, uppercuts, leads, combinations. I wouldn't know where to start. You can watch 9/10 Floyd fights and all your going to remember are left hooks and straight right hands. Tell me how that's not a weak offense??? The argument that it's good because nobody has beaten him, or nobody has forced him to throw combinations is a stupid argument and a cop-out. He's been made to look ordinary by less then great fighters. And if he could throw combinations, and if he was good at it, he'd do it period.

How can you say with a straight face he doesnt need to throw punches to the body? Is that something trainers should be telling there fighters? There's never a reason not to throw to body when you can.. If you can do it, land it, you should be doing it period.

The fact is that Floyd would be a better fighter if he was combination puncher, and he'd a be better fighter if he focused on the body more often. The fact that he doesn't , is an inconsistently, and doesn't reflect this idea that he's this complete, ulta versatile fighter period. Don't tell me Floyd is that versatile when I can call out what he's going to do and get it right most of the time.

I've never stated he's unbeatable. Here's my breakdown of what Cotto can maybe employ in the Mayweather bout...

I won't get into the fact that Pac isn't the reason the fight hasn't happened b/c anyone with sense knows its Arum, but actually Manny has bigger bone density than Floyd. Floyd is taller and longer, but Pac's overall frame appears more filled out than Floyds.

Agreed. No disrespect to the poster who your post is responding to but thus seems to be a common theme with ESB. It's good to look at some threads for entertainment but with the exception of a few posters, most of the people on this site, literally have no understanding of boxing

The only thing to say is ANYONE who watched that training session and had ANYTHING negative to say obviously does not box.

I challenge anyone on here to do an hour, just one hour of what we saw Floyd do and post it on youtube. Or even better Gander YOU show us how it SHOULD be done, let me see you throw all these "combinations" you so often like to talk about. I wanna see you walk a guy down whilst throwing combinations who out weights you by 20lbs or more......The fact is not one single poster could.

    /debate

A guy who can't or doesnt seem to know how to throw combinations cannot be called a 'great offensive fighter'. Sorry but that's inane. And who is he averaging all these punch connects against ?

So going forwards or backwards and cutting off the ring makes Floyd one of the most complete fighters ever? Is that what your arguing. Because Ive seen C / B level fighters do this? I'm sorry but it doesn't impress me as much as it does for you. And stop with 'youve never boxed bull****, 'because it's a cop-out. I never said it was easy to box, but we're talking about Floyd as a professional fighter and have ever right to judge him in contrast to his peers. If you wanna argue stick to whats relevant and stop the personal bull****.

It has nothing to do with waste. It's a basic part of boxing (putting punches together). Saying he doesn't need or have to do it isn't true and its a cop-out. If he could do it, and had the mentality to do it, he would do it, period. I understand that this is Floyd's style, but that's also my point. He can't do everything like people claim.

Floyd would be a better fighter if he could throw combinations, and that's a simple fact. Saying he's complete or this and that, when he can't seem to do something that's relatively basic in boxing shows a inconsistency in him as a fighter.

And no Floyd is not that hard to figure out. Castillo could tell you about that.

Let's look at a few facts here: Floyd is faster and quicker then 99% of the guys he's fought. He's also more talented and athletic. That gives him a big advantage out of the gate. His opposition has also been pretty mediocre wen you contrast his talent to his achievements.

Why was a guy like Zab Judah able to figure him out early on? Why was Oscar able to pick off and slip some many of Floyds punches? Why did Floyd have so much trouble dealing with a jab? Oscar is not known for having a good defense or a high IQ yet he made Floyd look really ordinary. What's your excuse for that?

I agree, he does have a great jab to the body, it's a beautiful punch, but he doesn't do a whole lot else down there and it shows an inconsistently in him as a fighter. There are plenty of examples where he could have done more and he didn't.

He didnt win the second fight bc Floyd used a lot more movement and took advantage of his speed and quickness . Castillo was too slow to deal with it. It's the speed and physical advantage that won Floyd that fight. He still didn't make any of the adjustments (or lack of) that I would have criticized him for in the first fight.

What's outlandish is calling Floyd the most complete fighter ever, or this or that bull**** when that is absolutely not true and he doesnt have the track record to back it up either. Saying things like that is disrespectful to other fighters, who are better and have more proven records then Floyd has. If everyone just agreed that Floyd was one of the greatest defensive fighters, and a very talented boxer, I wouldn't have a problem with that. But people spill out some major hyperbole on Floyd . More then I think I've ever seen in a long time.
