Sam Langford for me. He stretched Harry Wills (and many others) with single left hooks on two different occasions. Al Gainer possessed a monster left hook and was one of the most feared light-heavyweights of his era. Ditto Dal Hawkins as a featherweight at the turn of the century (he put Joe Gans on his backside and knocked out iron jawed Martin Flaherty with a left hook in the first round on the Corbett-Fitz undercard). Sonny Liston Eduardo Lausse and Cyclone Hart have two of the most consistently powerful left hooks I've seen.

Morlocks, Your right, your right, your right. Dempsey's left hook had a torque spin never duplicated by a heavyweight. The left hook he landed on Jess Willard's chin in the first round ,dropping the giant Willard , like a sack was almost surreal coming from a 185 pound Dempsey.Willard was never DROPPED before and took dozens of shots from Jack Johnson for 25 rounds without staggering. For another example watch Dempsey in the second round of the Firpo fight. While Dempsey and the ox-like Firpo were locked in a clinch, Dempsey somehow releases his left hand and shoots 8-10 short left hook-uppercuts on Firpo's chin with such power and rapidity [without punching room],that almost lift Firpo off his feet. I have never seen on film or in person such vicious speed and animalistic power since.. Check it out M...:good
you are correct sir! I have Dempsey's career and in honor of 90 years for Dempsey-Carpentier on July 2 and 92 years Willard on July 4. I watched his career. The Willard fight is my fav. fight ever. Dempsey was Tyson's number 1 hero and why he always tried to be a savage, yet failede of course. At his peak, I believe Dempsey was the greatest heavy that lived and the most exciting by far. I have been buying books and mags and articles on him for 40 years. Read the old articles and you see that up to Ali, noone had seen speed like Dempsey had. Today's new fan is all about body beautiful and big is better, but they are wrong. Whether they like hearing it or not. Not only Dempsey is forgotten, but as I've said. most old sports guys from the 20s 30s and such and still Arcel to his death ALL thought The Great (and this is the always what preceded his name) Benny Leonard was the greatest fighter pd. fpr pd. ever. But the new eversoknowledgable boxrec and youtube EXPERTS feel he would be hard pressed to beat a Marquez. It is their loss that they never reaslly have the chance or want to research the old, old timers. After watching the farce that was Haye-Klitscko, I pondered Dempsey sliding under the jab and HURTING Vlad. Or as he said to another boxer about how to combat a great jab, letting Vlad jab then bringing his giant fist down on the arm and shoulder. These guys that are all about Tyson and present day guys should tyalk to Tyson. They would soon discover that Tyson was for the old guys also. He knew true greatness and his fav. heavy ever was Jack Dempsey! He patterened his entire look from the haircut on down, to Dempsey's. Sharkey said it best when asked who would win a fight between Dempsey and Louis (who I think is also 1 of the top three and UNBELIEVEABLY is also given no respect from the cyberexperts). Sharkey said that if you put them in a phonebooth, he would bet it all that Dempsey would be the one to walk out standing! Have a nice july B. you are one of the few that really keep me reading through all the drivel and bull**** hypotheticals. :thumbsup
M,thank you for your words, and for your interest in the GREAT JACK DEMPSEY. He is so sadly neglected by today's flavor of the month posters. They Know virtually nothing about the HIGH regards he was held in by the great contemporaries who saw Langford, Jack Johnson, and all the top Heavyweights since Dempsey. These posters don't care if boxing people as langford, Mickey Walker, Hype Igoe, Damon Runyon, Nat Fleischer, Gene Tunney,Jack Sharkey, Max Schmeling, and Ray Arcel, Whitey Bimstein, and other experts who SAW the prime Manassa Mauler, overwhelm all his opponents, scoring 25 1st round kos in his resume. These posters just don't care, as THEY in their infinite wisdom ,somehow KNOW better EIGHTY years later. These same posters laud Joe Gans to the skies-laudSam Langford to the skies [rightfully so],but somehow do not give the same respect to the ABILITIES of Jack Dempsey. M ,I am perplexed by all this. When the name Jack Dempsey is mentioned it is like showing the color red to a bull. Their mantra is ALWAYS Harry Wills. Always whenever a thread mentioning the name Jack Dempsey is posted,Harry Wills ,by rote comes up. Yes Dempsey never fought Wills,[though they did sign], but Tex Rickard [who loved money] thought it was dangerous to match the black Harry Wills against Dempsey, remembering the race riots in the United States, following the Jeffries/Johnson fight in Reno. Did Harry Wills get a raw deal ,not getting a shot at the Title ? Hell YES. But Dempsey wanted to fight Wills as Jack loved the tall guys,as his record proves. In any event Dempsey at his best 1919-23,because of his UNIQUE style of blending welterweight speed, married to two-handed vicious hitting power, combined with a bobbing and weaving style, and an absolute love for battle never seen before or since in a heavyweight, deserves BETTER than the naysayers who DISREGARD the historic evidence of historians who SAW him...Thankjs M, nice to feel I'm not all alone in my sentiments..:good
i was reading an old mag the other day and like in ALL mags or books I read, the author, who had seen Dempsey and Wills, felt Dempsey would have won easily. And about Greb, Harry himself said that he would have loved to fight Dempsey, but ONLY six rds. He said after that, Jack would kill him. Dempsey was unbelievably violent.
Frazier's is such an iconic punch. That punch even has it's own biography about how it was formed. Damn, some punch. When you hear left hook everyone thinks of Frazier.
Suprised david tua is hardly mentioned. Also former british and european champion from the 1980s Pat Barrett perfert technique with natural punching power
It´s not the best.....but Patterson´s left hook is one of the best.... [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoK50XlZUDg[/ame]
im surprised no ones mentioned Holyfield. Yes Frazier dropped Ali who was known for a granite chin. but Holy dropped Bowe, Mercer and Tyson - thats 3 granite chinned mofos.....
