    Danny McAlinden,,,,,

    The Irish Heavyweight,

Caused quite a stir in the United Kingdom in late-1971.

McAlinden and his manager George Middleton made disparaging
remarks about Ali in the British Newspapers, prior to his
bout with Jurgen Blin in Zurich, Switzerland in December 1971.

Danny McAlinden questioned Ali's heart and said he was washed up.

McAlinden had beaten Ali's brother Rudy Clay on the FOTC undercard.
Rudy was undefeated, and McAlinden beat him bad in handing
    him his first loss.

George Middleton stated that Danny had beaten one Clay, and will
    now beat another one.

McAlinden had been challenging Ali for a few months, stating that
Ali was afraid to fight him in London.

'Dangerous Dan' was 20-1-2 (17 KO's) at the time, and had just
entered Ring Magazines Top 20 list, at #19.

'Dangerous Dan' did something that Joe Bugner couldn't do.

He flat out knocked Jack Bodell the F*** Out.

Danny got a break by NOT fighting Ali. He would n't have lasted three rounds, and Muhammad would have been fired up,due to Danny's comments.

    Stevie,,,,,,,,

    I agree,,,,,,,,,Danny Mac not in Ali's league,,,,,,,,

But it would have been one hell of a 'Pier 6 Brawl' for a few rounds.

When Ali went to London before the Jurgen Blin bout, George Middleton
really ripped Ali a new one in the press.

Danny Mac had ruined Rudy Clay's unbeaten run, and was riding that victory for the whole year in 1971.

Calling Ali Clay was a very stupid move.

    See Terrell and Patterson

Senor Pepe - Of course the Bodell that McAlinden ko'd was in no way shape or form, the same Bodell that Bugner Froze Against, Jack had that rude 60 second awakening - if being ko'd can be called an Awakening ! - against Jerry Quarry, following that little Episode, in his very next fight Jacks European rug was similarly pulled from under him by Rock throwing Jose Urtain, When Jack entered the ring before the first bell he didnt look too good on his feet, and one thing he did retain was that barndoor chin, it was Jacks Pension fight, and afterwards, having seen his aspirations slip from world to europe to Uk, Jack must of wondered if he was still champ of his own farm !? A very Crude encounter indeed, McAlinden did have a Mini-Thriller on the way up with tough trailhorse Roberto Davilia, In those days the talk was more of McAlinden V Bugner....Later on Mr Morris Jackson was brought over as another sacrificial lamb, But Dan forgot the Mint Sauce...And Morris turned out ..on this evening...to be something of a ravenous wolf in sheeps clothing...

    Frank n' Frank,,

Me no understand,,,,,,,Danny Mac beats Rudy Clay and challenges
Muhammad Ali,,,,,,,,,,,and that means I don't like Muhammad Ali...???

Dangerous Dan has health issues, and I thought I would just mention him, so some of us might take a look at his past accomplishments.

You know, Danny Mac blasted out Richard Dunn in one round.
And, was considered as a possible challenger for George Foreman's first
title defense in 1973 (before getting upset by Morris Jackson).

Danny Mac earned a #10 World Ranking after destroying Jack Bodell
for the British Commonwealth Heavyweight Title in June 1972.

    OK,,,,,,,,,,,,How about this,,,,

Danny McAlinden was a brawling-slugger Irish Heavyweight based in the
    United Kingdom.

Not to be mistaken for a stylish-boxer, Dangerous Dan was an exciting
wild swinging heavyweight who never disappointed his fans.

One of his claims to fame, is that he fought Rudy Clay (Muhammad Ali's brother)
on the undercard at the Fight of the Century in March 1971 at Madison Square Garden.
McAlinden upset the younger and undefeated brother of Ali, and Danny used that
victory to pester Muhammad Ali from 1971 thru 1973.

Danny was never a world beater nor was he anyway as good as your implying. Anyone with a bit of commonsense could see he was obviously trying to secure a once-in-a-lifetime payday against Ali. A decent fighter at domestic level at best and thank the good lord he wasnt thrown in against 73 Foreman, for he would have been decapitated.

I dont mean to come across as harsh as Danny is a good bloke and nice guy, but you gotta call it how you see it.

Incidently, the irish trainer John Breen, who at 1 stage had several world champions on the go (espana, hodkinson, cordoba, mcauley as well as collins, close) and McAlinden married 2 sisters, whose father was boxing manager micky callaghan.

A little off topic here, but to Senor Pepe, about your post regarding ireland v US Heavyweights only international, im really gonna have to see some kinda evidence this happened. The reason being that the irish coach at the time circa Munich olympics 72, was gerry storey, and he was asked yesterday about this and said it was the first he'd heard it.

    JM36,

I have to search the TV Guide Sporting Events to come up with the
USA vs Ireland match, which had to be in the mid-70's.

It may have been on ABC Wide World of Sports, who hosted many of
    the US Amateur boxing events.

As for Danny Mac,,,,,,,,,of course he was not a 'World Beater', but that bout with
Jack Bodell was pretty wild. Like a bar brawl.

As for pure entertainment,,,,he was 'World Class' in my book.

I'd rather watch 2 Rounds of Danny Mac fighting, than 10 Rounds of
Jimmy Young vs. Jody Ballard any day of the week.
