If Roy Jones had retired after beating Ruiz...

He'd be a bit lower than I rate him today.

His victory over tarver was top class. Plus past prime showings against sheika and lacey are good also.

An early retirement doesn't improve a career, he still achieved everything he did up until ruiz, plus he picked up some decent wins.

Anyone holding any loss after tarver ko2 against him is a moron imo.

 

The first Tarver win adds alot to his resume and career.

If he'd said after that fight 'I haven't felt like myself since the weight loss, I'm 35 years old. You'll see me at ring side but no longer in the ring.' then it would of been perfect.
This forum would be rampant with Jones vs SRR threads, and opinion would be strongly divided.

 

For starters, P4P is made-up, a mythical title/rankings system to justify nuthuggers making lists that have all of their heroes on them. Secondly, if we are going to discuss something nonexistant like this, why would Glass Jaw Roy be anywhere near the top of it? He beat two top fighters, exactly two top fighters in his entire career and one was weight-drained and completely out-of-shape because he had already eaten himself out of MW and was not looking good at SMW either. Also, both were complete stinkers with more circling and posturing than actual fighting because both parties were scared to engage.

Jones is a Glass Jawed Fraud and his career was nothing more than a dog-and-pony show characterized by more skillful matchmaking than actual fighting.

 

If he did he would of went out on top and saved himself a lot of embarrassment.

I think moving back down and winning a title was the greatest thing he achieved, had he retired after Tarver he would be alot higher in a lot of rankings but is losing past prime really a merit to rank him lower?

 

Also had he not been caught taking **** I think alot of people would be more forgiving.

You can say this about almost every fighter if they retired after they were at their peak they would be considered a lot better probably. Felix Trinidad prior to the hopkins fight, tyson prior to douglas, hagler prior to leonard. All fighters end up losing their invencibility and start to look average and then fall on their rankings. It will also happen with floyd and pac right now people have them in the top 20 and some even top ten all time but when is all said and done both will be top 50 which is about right.
