I see so many sides of the story, some say he beat a future ATG while others claim that he was exposed bad by Vitali's workrate, boxing skills etc and only got a lucky stoppage.
Only to those who honestly feel that a 37 year old semi-active fighter at the end of his career, should be penalized for getting a win over a top rater in his prime. As for myself? No..
Closing out his career with a win over someone who is, at worst, considered the 2nd best HW of the post-Lewis era does not hurt Lewis's career.
It's a funny double standard When Lewis faced Tyson, he was in the prime of his career and that's the only reason he won. When Lewis faced Vitali Klitschko, his NEXT fight, he was not in his prime and was no where near it. Anyone that thinks Lewis walks over Vitali in his prime is not only an idiot, but has to realize that Vitali is an amazing boxer. Lewis loses to Vitali in his prime just like he was getting his ass kicked in that match. The match did hurt Lennox's career because it can always be used as the time that Lennox was actually outboxed. If Vitali didn't face Lewis people would always claim that Lewis would easily win, but with that match people understand the fact that Lewis can only win in a lucky fashion.
which still doesn't take away from the fact that Lewis won on pure chance, and not by skill. Boxers don't win fights by trying to cut the other fighter up for a stoppage.
I don't think it hurt his legacy: winning 2 rounds against Vitali is as much as anyone else managed so, logically, there is no real basis for comparison. Being forced into retirement did hurt his legacy though.
I don't cry over the result at all. The fact was that my favorite fighter outboxed the greatest boxer of an era and at the end of the night raised his hands up and had the whole crowd cheer for him and jeer Lewis. Then after that Lewis refused the rematch. Then later on Emmanuel Steward himself revealed that Lewis told him he didn't want a rematch because Vitali hurt him way too much that fight. It was a perfect result in the end, and it helps Klitschko fans prove their point that both brothers are top 10 all time.
The cut was like winning the lottery for Lewis, he would have lost the fight otherwise, and instead he has a win over the next great HW.
