I once had a beer with Dan in a hotel about 15yrs back SP.Do you realise how surreal it is to have a beer with a guy who can genuinely claim that he beat Ali at Madison Sq Garden in March 71??? Appreciate that info if you could dig it up as its caused a bit of a stir
JM36, I'll search for that boxing match.. By the way John 'Jackie' Wright,,,,,,,,,the coolest actor...
Ha ha ha ha! My ex used to work in the nursing home he ended up in. Said he was a right cantankerous man
I was big fan of Danny back in the day and I really thought he could have ko'd Bugner who many believed had a glass chin back then. How wrong we were but hindsight. Joe had lost his debut on a three round ko. BTW McAlinden drew with Floyd Patterson's Ray brother as well. Danny's problem as well as his lack of finesse was a glass jaw and cuts.
How about Dangerous Dan McAlinden versus Irish Jerry Quarry on Saint Patrick's Day in New York City. Would probably have drawn 75,000 fans,,,,,,,,all Irish of course. Pints for Everyone.
A proper Introduction 'Dangerous' Dan McAlinden Coventry, West Midlands, United Kingdom A 6' 1" 195 lb. wide-swinging brawler, with heavy-fists. Turns Pro in July 7, 1969, 1 month before his 22nd birthday. Danny enters a 1-Day Heavyweight 3-Round Novice Tournament in Mayfair, London. First Opponent, Richard Dunn (remember him). In a 3-Round Novice Tournament, Danny Mac knocks out Dunn in the 1st Round. Danny goes on to Knock-out Dennis Avoth and John Cullen in successive bouts that evening, winning the Novice Heavyweight Tournament. Danny scores an impressive 3rd round knock-out over American Phil Smith (10-3-1) in just his 5th bout. Danny is now 5-0-0 with 5 knock-outs. Builds his record to 11-0-0 (11 KO's), then matched with American Jack O'Halloran for July 6, 1970. 'Giant Jack' stands 6' 6", and weighs 235 lbs. Though carrying a modest record of 18-8-2 (9 KO's), O'Halloran is not to be taken lightly, as he has been in the ring with quality fighters. (Jimmy Richards, Joe Roman, George Foreman, Joe Bugner, Tony Doyle, Al Jones and Mac Foster) Out-weighed by 40 lbs. Danny Mac his handed his first loss, as 'Giant Jack' out-muscles him over 8 rounds and uses his experience to out-point Danny. Two quick knock-out wins follow, when Dangerous Dan 13-1-0 (13 KO's) is matched with veteran heavyweight Ray Patterson (23-10-4), the brother of former 2-Time Heavyweight World Champion Floyd Patterson. People really believed Bugner had a glass chin back then? I never heard that, but I never lived in England. Bugner was stopped in his pro debut in three rounds, laid out cold by one punch. Bodell dropped Bugner in the 14th round of their fight. After that, Larry Middleton put Bugner down in the 9th or 10th round of their bout, but Bugner had a broken jaw that night. Those were Bugner's only knockdowns during his early years. I know the British promoters were big on making Bugner-McAlinden in 1973, but American journeymen Mo Jackson KO'd Danny, killing plans for the big British title showdown.
He did and Shavers as well but that was a few years later. On the strength of this thread I watched McAlinden-Bodell and liked it. Danny was sure an all action fighter but I'm glad he never fought Ali and especially Foreman as he was'nt anywhere near that level to be honest. Even Bugner likely trounces him but Aussie Joe was capable of putting in a stinker every so often, so you never know. But he was an entertaining, gutsy brawler and boxing fans always love them too.
December 1970, Danny McAlinden in his first 10-Rounder battles veteran American Heavyweight Ray Patterson to a 10 Round Draw. An early aggressor in the bout, Dangerous Dan fades over the second-half of the bout, which allows the experienced Patterson to rally and earn a Draw. In February 1971, Danny Mac battles American Light-Heavyweight Tommy Hicks (10-5-2). Hicks who sometimes fights at Heavyweight, spots McAlinden 20 lbs. After hurting Hicks early, Danny again fades over the second-half, again allowing another fighter to rally, and earn a Draw. With a record of 14-1-2 (13 KO's), Manager George Middleton secures a bout for Danny on the undercard of the Fight of the Century, in March at Madison Square Garden. The opponent, Muhammad Ali's brother Rudy (Rahman Ali). Rudy Clay at 7-0-0 is looking for a name opponent to add to his record. The hard-punching, but crude McAlinden appears to the perfect foe. The bout will only be scheduled for 6-Rounds, which actually benefits McAlinden. The fight between Rahman Ali and Danny McAlinden will be the fight to precede the Ali vs. Frazier bout.
