I don't mean Cotto should go mad from the off, but sparring 5-7 minute rounds is fantastic if you're just going to be largely as you say coasting through rounds at a comfortable pace, but if you have somebody that can up the intensity, even if only for a short period of time, those 5-7 minute rounds of sparring aren't going to count for a lot.

As much as I like Cotto, I unfortunately agree with what you say last, that I don't think he has the physical gifts to do what is needed.

 

Cotto has no hope. No real weapons in this fight. Doesn't have a good enough jab to keep Floyd off kilter, its absolutely neccessary. It's functional, but not good enough over 12 rounds, it started off well against Pacquiao etc but as he started to get picked apart it unravels.

His defence is not good enough at all, Floyd will punch through his guard all night with lead rights and then grab him and neutralize him, and if he tries to take the air out of Floyd's legs on the ropes which might seem a good tactic he's incredibly open to being picked off.

As Dftaylor says, he has to pick his spots because he's not physical enough to last 12 if he attempts high pressure, but the reality is he's nowhere near Mayweather's level in an out and out tactical affair. All I see is Floyd picking him off initially, and has the bout progresses you can imagine Floyd's energy levels increasing and Cotto in reserve.

 

Agree with most of the above, but I would add one thing... Diaz. He is the intangible in this fight. Miggy is still the one who has got to get in there and do it, and stylistically, he has always been very predictable... don't let him dictate the pace, maintain the pressure, he'll start backpedalling, then he will gas/fold, but something tells me that this Diaz guy may have added a few things to Miguel's arsenal that could throw up a few surprises. At the end of the day though, no matter what you throw at him, Mayweather always adapts, and that will ultimately be the case in this fight too.

 

Ricky Hatton was one of Floyd Mayweathers toughest fights. People forget WHAT intrinsically and deep down..? What type of fighter Miguel Cotto is, he's terminator, bad man..............."Before Magarito warmed his blood up from being cold as ice..? He was a cold hearted systematic and sadistic, a break you down mentally and physically type of fighter.

In recent times we have seen Miguel Cotto, displaying WAY above average ring IQ and the ability to fight off the back foot. Against fighters who are TANKS, Margarito, Clottey, Mayorga.........."These are big big guys, and pretty much the same way David Haye adapted his style to the heavyweight division..? Miguel Cotto adapted his style of fighting to 154.

Miguel Cotto has had a serious element of fear up against his last opponents, guys like Antonio Margarito, is like the Mexican version of the juggernaut, almost invulnerable to physical attacks, and once he gains momentum, he cannot be stopped.

"When you face Floyd Mayweather he does not register that element of fear..? Fear of serious injury, or fear for your life..............I don't care how good his defence is, or sweet science, he does not register that fear element"

I don’t believe Floyd Mayweather can inflict the same kind of damage on Miguel Cotto that Antonio Margarito could with his offensive weapons.

I know two things that are going to happen on May 5th…

Two guys are going to be hit, one named Miguel Cotto & the other Floyd Mayweather. In these past few years, Mayweather has been hit..? He has been caught..? But Mosley was not physically fit enough to sustain it, and Ricky Hatton just didn’t have the sharpness to land clean bombs often enough.

I think Miguel Cotto is physically fit enough, I think technically he is sharp enough to land consistently..? And he is not going to be backing up, Cotto is the big guy in this fight! He's the juggernaut in this fight!

It’s going to be the same Miguel Cotto that faced Zab Judah, educated pressure.

Its not going to be a easy fight! Strong Miguel Cotto at 154! bad news man.

Ricky Hatton would of beat Floyd Mayweather if he was just abit more educated, and the ref was not such a kill joy.

If I wanted to be right, I could be right EVERYTIME..? But that would be boring.

Logically I picked Miguel Cotto to win, but I’m a selfish person sometimes. So I always chose to go with my instinct and self serving emotion.

Logic/reason Kool..? Or Instinct/self serving emotion Kool.

Logically my mind is telling me to pick Floyd Mayweather, and giving me a whole host if reasons to make that pick.

But my instinct/self serving emotion is starting to take over! It has been gaining in strength these past weeks.

Every once in awhile my instinct and self serving emotion is correct...? When it is correct it has a drug like affect.

Ask LP_1985..? If you know anything about Formula One..? If anybody would have told you that Fernando Alonso would win the Malaysia Grand Prix, and give a structured defined scenario how..? It would have been hard to believe.

I put a bet on Fernando Alonso, and I won! This was a turning point for my instinct/self serving emotional side of my brain and psychological make up.

I'm on a roll.....

Are we talking now or when he rematched Margo? Because you picked Margo, and in dominating, destructive fashion.

The only problem with Hopkins's quote in this context is Mayweather very likely can hurt Cotto, and even if he can't outright hurt him its extremely likely he can in fact discourage him from taking liberties.

The problem is you're basing this off all that macho stuff about what Cotto used to be. Recently, he hasn't been. He's been more of a boxer-puncher, sometimes off the back-foot especially in second half of fights. None of this is good news, because its going to be hard to get out of that mode even if he wants to, and if he doesn't he's stuck boxing against Mayweather where he holds no real advantages. He also has a massive problem to overcome in that whatever strategy he uses, he's been known to gas in fights and Mayweather ALWAYS gets stronger in fights. That's an incredibly powerful factor to consider.

 

What intensity are most of Mayweathers fights..? Not really of the intensity and pace of Cotto fights..? The last intense fight Mayweather had was against Ricky Hatton and he was not fresh as a daisy in that fight.

I don't think Miguel Cotto will be a boxer puncher in this fight..? That was a adapted style..! like i stated..because he was fighting TANKS like Antonio Margarito & Joshua Clottey for example.

 

PK, Cotto flat out gassed against Joshua Clottey, and lets just say Clottey doesn't throw many punches and that's being generous.

I don't see Cotto suddenly changing his recent style, PK. And if he does do you really see that strategy working? If anything its likely to play into Mayweather's hands where he can fill in the gaps and soak up Cotto's best work and back him up late on.

I don't see Mayweather being very defensive in this fight as it happens.

Cotto has no chance, he doesnt do anything well enough to give Mayweather real trouble. He doesnt punch hard enough, isnt fast enough, and tbh I think at 154 Mayweather will prove to be at least as strong as Cotto.
Nobody has even man handled Mosely the way Mayweather did.
Also someone said Mayweather cant hurt Cotto? What a ****ing ridiculous statement that is.
He hurt Mosely over and over again to the point Mosely was pretty much unwilling to throw anything. Thats what Mayweather did to DLH, its what he does to everybody.

Cotto is going to look terrible in this fight, as every defensive mistake he makes, he'll be eating straight rights and lead left hooks.
Nobody in boxing makes that fist step, into, or out of range than Mayweather, and Cotto will look real slow and clumsy here.

Youre going to see the difference between a very good fighter, and a great one. Cotto might win a round or 2 as Mayweather takes a look, then it will be all Mayweather till Cotto's corner stop it, or he limps to the final bell.
