I know quiete a lot about him, including how good his wins over Danny Lopez, Wilfredo Gomez and Azumah Nelson are. However there are a number of names he defended his title against and I was wondering how good they are. Could people fill me in on Rocky Garcia Pat Cowdell Robert Castanon Juan Laporte Ruben Castillo Pat Ford I know a little about Laporte and Castillo (seen them fight J.C.C) but not much, and nothing about the rest. What where they like and was there any notables Sanchez didn't fight before his premature death? Thanks
go to classic forum there are big fans of Sal that we'll give you a good feedback. We talk Pac, Floyd and Klit brothers around here...
All i can really remember from the La Porte fight was sanchez taking a most vicious uppercut-hook combo, gonna have to watch it again.
Pat Cowdell was a solid EBU level fighter but struggled when he stepped up.Azumah Nelson KO's him very early(1st or 2nd I think) I know Barry McGuigan's career never panned out as hoped, but when he was doing well and at his best, stylistically he'd have been a fabulous match-up for Chava. It would have been a classic.
Roberto Castoñon was one of the best spaniards fighter ever (not saying much I know), several times EBU and remembered today in Spain. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MQs9QuU4qeg[/ame] (excellent spanish boxing channel)
or not... his legendary status grew by dying in his prime nobody got to see him when his skills diminish or when he went up in weight... :hat
He was planning on moving up to light weight to fight Arguello, he said it is a few interviews. Too bad, Sanchez vs Arguello at 135 would have been an ATG match.
Back then there was a bit more realism about moving up the divisions. What Chava had in his favour was that he was big enough at the weight and was still young. Chava v Arguello would have been a fight for the ages.:good Still think that stylistically,McGuigan was the best fight at feather for him(allowing for the fact that McGuigan beat Pedroza a bit later.) It's easy to be romantic, but I genuinely believe Chava had more about him than Chavez.
Ford gave him a very tricky fight..Buzzed him a couple of times and baffled him early with his enormous height and reach advantage. Ford showed he was world class in not just that fight but his fight with Pedroza about 6 months later...However Pedroza had a much easier time with Pat, eventually dominating and stopping him. Cowdell might have been champion that night against a lesser fighter...in fact I guarantee he would of..He put on one of those once in a career sort of performances where he just wasn't going to go away no matter what was being thrown at him..Sanchez fought a pretty poor tactical fight which kept letting Cowdell into the fight and complemented his awkward style...But Salvador got home by a couple of points in the end, no controversy there.
as far as moving up in divisions ... yes and no. Arguello cleaned out divisions quickly: move up, fight the top three guys, move up, fight the top three guys, move up fight the top three guys, etc lose to Pryor competitively. And I think Alexis would have been too big, too powerful, and too unfazed by Sal's power for him to lose to Sanchez unless it was a sheer masterclass from Sal. I think Sal is slightly over-rated in a head to head sense because of his almost flukish destruction of huge punching Wilfredo Gomez, the rest of his career he was way less explosive and dynamic and I think his speed and power are over-rated even though he has a tireless, smooth style. I don't think he matches up well against truly fast and powerful swarmers if he can be cornered. We all know if Barrera had never fought Junior Jones and had died right after his fight with Naseem Hamed we would rank him as the greatest feather of all time - Sal could very well have met with some Junior Jones style cryptonite if he continued. Barrera has a more impressive career but it isn't fair to compare them because of that premature death, and if Barrera had died we would be like, HE would have destroyed sloppy Pac, etc.
