Asking for Lee instead of an easier tuneup for Martinez. Insisting on the Martinez fight in order to sign an extension with Top Rank. Gives us great fights and 100% effort every time he steps in the ring. Let's face it, Rubio, Lee and Martinez in 2012 is not a guy that wants to be protected. Jr is a straight up G. :deal
I'd be far more inclined to give him credit if he actually gets in the ring with those guys. Simply saying you want them in interviews isn't anywhere near enough, especially if all of your call-outs are immediately qualified by "as long as my promoter says it's okay."
After Chavez beat Zbik he said he would fight Martinez. After he beat Manfredo it was supposed to be Martinez next. After he beat Rubio it was supposed to be Martinez. Now he is fighting Lee or some other contender. The guy is a joke. He has gotten better as a boxer but he is still a joke.
I feel sorry for the kid, people have these extremely high expectations for him, all because he is Sr.'s son. He'll find his way.
Both fights are pretty well set; well Chavez-Lee winner gets Sergio in September. Lots of information out there if you want to read up and connect the dots.
Martinez is the only one saying the Chavez fight is pretty much set, and he said the same thing about a fight with Floyd that never materialized. Lee's name has been connected to Chavez to the same extent it is right now several times in the past and those fights never panned out either simply because he's a southpaw.
Good thread. I've been a fan since he he showed he had some substance with little AM exp in the Molina and Vanda fights. Considering he was then being measured against Camacho Jr, I'd say he's come a helluva long way in terms of ability and appeal since.:thumbsup
Chavez is going to get the TV date regardless of the opponent. Arum liked Lee as an opponent after the Zbik and Manfredo fights and nothing ever came of it. DiBella's quotes on the subject don't make it sound like he's in negotiations. Both fights could obviously be close to being made, but given Chavez's track record I'm not going to give him any credit until he actually steps in the ring.
It was less than a yr ago that ppl were saying he was a hype and that he needed a name like Rubio to give him credibility. Well, IMO, Rubio, Molina are better than Macklin and Barker.:yep
He fought a lightly regarded green Molina ages ago; I see no reason to give him credit simply because Molina turned into a good junior middleweight years after the fact, especially because Chavez clearly lost the first one IMO. Other than that, I think you're pretty much alone in rating Rubio above Barker and especially Macklin.
