Jorge "Hype Job" Linares

Linares has always been a hype-job. I never saw him as talented even before his chin was exposed. I've been calling on his fall for years. He just seems to be a generic combination boxer-puncher with no ability to adjust in the ring or control the pace with a decent fighter. Not a thinking man's fighter at all. Doesn't have the mentality or the durability to succeed at the top level. That much is now clear to all.

Okay, so what's the big deal then? A guy who's skills seem to be enough to make him world level, yet his shortcomings are such that he's held back, not irregular in boxing at all. I don't get the "hypejob" garbage for one second, like anyone was saying "Linares isn't ****" before he took some really bad loses. One cannot deny that at least in the ring, at face value the man was one of the more athletically gifted fighters in his weight class, in this era. By admitting he was or is a hypejob, is admitting he's underachieved. If someone, (even boxing experts) have not been impressed by something they have seen from Linares, then there would be no discussion of "hypejob" this or that. Can we all admit, he's a gifted but very flawed fighter, with also very unfortunate luck.

 

That's how you become a hype job. There are a lot of of things that go into being succesful. Some people only recognize some of those things, and ignore other things. That leads guys getting over or under hyped. Linares is athletic and looks aesthetically pleasing against certain guys. However, the there are basic things as a boxer needed to be succesful that Linares lacks. He will probably never end up being the guy he was built up to be.

 

I agree with you, Reg. I just can't agree with the notion that the accolades and compliments he was receiving were unwarranted. Steward, for instance was enamored with the way Linares looked as he fought. As were, well, pretty much any credentialed boxing writer or expert. I just can't buy into the fact that no one expected this to happen to him BEFORE he even got to an elite level as some are leading on. There is far too much biased ideas for me to believe any of it. No one knew, it was unexpected, and clearly some are quite happy with the outcome.

 

there was high hopes for linares in the beginning. if u know what u are seeing....he oozes class in the ring. his movement is very precise and subtle...and he has razor sharp timing and punches. problem is....at the wildcard...he's an afterthought. he doesn't get the attention he deserves. he's a much better fighter than he has shown. when guys like alex ariza are supervising ur boxing workouts....ur in for ****. he needs a trainer who can add to what he has...and give him the time he needs. freddie roach is not that guy for linares. he'd do better by going back to the ppl who groomed him in venezuela.

 

Linares is far from a hype job, his talent is very obvious. He's a beautifully techical boxer for anyone who loves the sport when he's moving his hands and he LOOKS like he should just be crushing everyone in front of him. There's something missing with him and I'll be damned if I know what it is. Maybe his power is nowhere the level it SEEMS to be just from watching his punches. I dunno.

What's indisputable is that watching him throw those fluid combinations is one of the greatest pleasures in the sport today.

man I just watched the Thompson fight... Jorge had NO head movement, was heavy on his feet, the combinations weren't there. He has regressed seriously since he's been with Roach. He needs to get the **** out of there.
