sometimes it is better to stay quiet and be a mystery than to open your mouth and show your value and worth and in your case your youth and limited intelligence.
See my previous posts on it... no need to repeat it here. Again, Dempsey admitted drawing the color line. One can only go so far to excuse him based on the "he was a product of his times" excuse. As a matter of fact, one need only go so far as Greb.
People seem to have the idea that the champion should engage in a moral crusade, to ensure that the best challengers get the chance to take his title off him. In practice the most principled champion, would probably feel that once he had offered his top challenger some sort of title shot, he had met his obligations in the matter.
Depends what time you are talking about. New York Times, July 6, 1919 -- page 20 JACK DEMPSEY, NEW HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMPION, ANNOUNCES HE WILL DRAW THE COLOR LINE Dempsey Will Meet Only White Boxers Toledo, Ohio, July 5--In the first public statement since becoming the heavyweight champion of the world, Jack Dempsey announced today that he would draw the color line. He will pay no attention to negro challengers, but will defend his title against any white heavyweight as the occasion demands. (Later in the article) His statement that he has drawn the color line means that Jack will pay no attention to any challenges which might come from Harry Wills, who is just now the king-pin of the black heavyweights. Next spring it is not improbable that Dempsey will be matched to fight Georges Carpentier, the French heavyweight, or Jim Beckett, the new English champion. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- At this point, it isn't the politicians, but Dempsey himself who is drawing the color line. But public criticism caused him to eventually backtrack to some extent by 1923, though Wills still didn't get a shot. Then came this incident in August of 1925: ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Time Magazine 8-17-1925 Jack Dempsey was introduced from the ring at the opening of Olympic Stadium in Los Angeles. Booing thundered from the topmost rim of the amphitheatre, mixed with a chant of "Bring on Wills." Dempsey turned the color of an embarressed orchid and crept back to his seat. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- After this event, Dempsey does seem to have honestly looked into having a fight with Wills. In the early twenties, when Wills had the best shot, Dempsey hid behind the color line. Was Dempsey on the level? He signed for a fight, but the money paid was paid to the challenger, an odd turn of events.
ducked is a loaded term but in the end, dempsey did not fight two of, possibly THE two, most viable challengers of his time. the specifics aside, fair or not, that will always haunt him
"If he avoided Wills, why would he sign a contract to fight him?" To fool people. We just don't know if Dempsey or someone in the Dempsey camp had put out feelers to the powers that be in Indiana and knew that this fight would be aborted before it ever got off the ground. This sort of sneaky politics is not unknown. Sort of like William Muldoon being for a Dempsey-Wills fight but then throwing up a roadblock by suddenly raising an issue about ticket prices. Cynics might wonder about his real motive.

Maybe they do, i don't know. For me, all I know is that if there is a clear top 2 for 5-7 years and they don't fight, you don't know who is best.
I'm honestly not interested in excuses or side taking. Both could have done more to make the fight. Both, imo, did actually want to fight each other. I like mcgrain's thinking about no way of objectively deciding who the best was. It's like wlad and vitali now. Lewis and holyfield in the 90's. Overall resume strength is quite clearly with wills. I believe resume strength between 18-21 is with jack. The moment jack left the ring for hollywood whilst wills remained active is the moment I think jack stopped being the best hw in the world.
A question like Vitali-Wlad is a little different becasue we have every major figh teach ever fought, whereas we have no footage of a prime Wills at all.
