So I recently began to train boxing with a friend who had a short amateur career. Now, I don't intend to go pro and more than likely will not even try my hand at amateur, but it's a great workout and being that I have followed boxing over the years, it's fun to actually perform it. Since I am fairly new (Started in January), I have been working a lot on my foot work. I can honestly say that I can now appreciate the minute details involved in moving around and changing angles more than ever before. With that in mind, I was trying to think of fights where technically solid foot work helped the winner just completely take over a fight. The first one I thought of was Hopkins vs Trinidad. I think I enjoyed watching it a lot more this time around since I was able to appreciate the subtleties that Hopkins had to offer. Are there any other fights you guys would recommend I watch?

The amount of actual Boxing threads tonight has been fantastic, a real change.

    Watch Hopkins - Trinidad

Marquez vs Pacquaio (3 may be best here)

    Pacquaio - Cotto

3 very different, very effective types of footwork.

 I was going to say the same thing. This is awesome.

And Mayweather Ortiz showed very good subtle footwork by Floyd. Not too much movement, but precise and well educated foot placement.

Floyd throws his lead right here, and moves right foot to the right a little and he comes up at a whole different angle.

Floyd moves his left foot to the left outside of Ortiz's right foot so he can get the right position of his straight right

Ortiz comes at Floyd and Floyd is able to move and avoid Ortiz to set up his counter right hand as Ortiz charges in

again Ortiz charges in and Floyd moves back at an angles to set up the lead right

This is just like the first one

Floyd ducks below to avoid Ortiz's punch and pivots so he doesn't pop up at the same spot and to keep Ortiz off balance

ESB is on a roll tonight with good threads, keep it up. Seperates the insightful from the blind nuthuggers.

I would say no one did it better than Gomez but Sal Sanchez(fights with Lopez for ex) and Hearns(quick but stoppages over Duran and Cuevas for ex) are good to watch for footwork too. The best now are Hopkins and Floyd.

    Mikkel Kessler v. Librado Andrade

Kessler isn't known for his footwork, but he moved well during this fight and completely baffled poor old Librado, who was unable to cope with even the slightest lateral movement and basically got pummeled that night.

Manny Pacquiao v. Oscar De La Hoya

Pacquiao's "turning" moves were brilliant in this fight against an admittedly weight-drained foe. Pacquiao would jet inward, throw a left hand, and dart off to the side to avoid DLH's counter fire. A simple move, but worked beautifully all night long.

    Floyd Mayweather v. Diego Corrales

Might be a bit too obvious a pick, but PBF's lateral movement was so effective in this fight it was ridiculous. Corrales would only throw when he had a stationary target, but Floyd was moving so deftly and constantly that Diego only landed 2-3 significant punches the entire fight.

    Very good threads tonight

Marquez vs Pacquiao III for fine examples of footwork vs a Southpaw

    As mentioned Hopkins vs Trinidad

Cotto vs Margarito I & II (Cotto's lateral movement is exceptional)

    Floyd Mayweather vs Diego Corrales

Wladimir Klitschko vs David Haye (yes, really) - Wladimirs footwork while pressuring Haye is top notch, as is Haye's in evading pressure from Wladimir - though neither are great examples of footwork WHILE punching :D

Floyd Mayweather vs Ricky Hatton, brilliant offensive footwork & footspeed to close the distance from Hatton and Brilliant defensive footwork from Floyd

    Sugar Ray vs Hearns

Take a look at Pacquiao vs Cotto & Pacquiao vs Marques I, II, & III, focus paritularly on Pacmans ability to pivot before and after and sometimes while throwing punches is second to none, however his balance/cutting off the ring is lacking...it seems one is sacrificed for the other

    Brilliant gifs Bball

Balance is key to footwork as well so be careful who we are putting high on that list.

Good post. That move against the ropes is awesome.

I think the way he ducks down would be very useful against Pacquiao. Marquez did a lot of that in the 1st fight.

Thanks for all the responses. bball, those gifts are excellent. It's funny how I notice the little things more now than I did just 3 months ago. I was thinking maybe watching some of Ward's more recent fights would be good too.

Love hearing people doing a bit of boxing, gives you a whole new perspective. Too many people on here claim to be boxing fans but have no respect for fighters.
