The Dokes that beat John L. Gardner and Lynn Ball against the Page that handled Marty Monroe in a 15 rounder. Who wins?
Greg would need to keep this one at long range. I don't think he'd succeed. Page's punches may have had superior radar gun speed traveling though the air, but Mike didn't telegraph his hook, and was unquestionably much quicker than Greg. To win the decision, Greg has to keep enough distance between himself and Mike to take the Dokes hook out of the equation. At 212-215, Dokes was better conditioned than Greg, and far more consistent. Through the first 13 years of his career, Mike only lost to Coetzee, and finished in 1997 with losses in the single digits. By the time Greg turned 30, he'd already lost seven times, and arguably was outboxed twice by George Chaplin. I think Dokes should have been on the short end of the scoring in his two draws with Ocasio and Weaver, but their performances were far more formidable in my estimation than the showings of the opponents who outshined Greg generally were. I don't believe there would be any KDs or stoppage. Dokes UD 15 Page
Dokes & Page may have met several times in the amateurs. Wide World of Sports used to carry all those Championships back in the good ol' days. Duane Bobick, Greg Page, Dokes, Nick Wells, Teo Stevenson, were all on TV. But Dokes was small then...he grew a lot when he became a pro.
I read somewhere they did meet in the National Golden Gloves back in '76.Someone once mentioned that they split a couple of fights in the amateurs.
Greg Page would win this fight if he's in shape.Michael Dokes was not on his level as far as skillset, but he was more focused as far as career goals, so if Greg gets in one of his 239 pound moves, Michael outworks him.220-224, Greg has a very strong chance to pull off a UD.
Ive read that Dokes beat Page in the amateurs in 1976. Both guys near their best is an unlikely scenario, a coked-up Dokes vs a chubby Page is more likely. Page would start well, moving around & using that long left jab of his. As he tires Dokes starts slipping & gets inside, landing fast combinations to head & body. Dokes wins a close decision over 12 & the after-fight party lasts a week :smoke
That could happen, but also remember that Dokes didn't always have the best stamina, look at the Cobb and Chaplin fights.
I've only seen the 2nd Cobb fight so I cant really comment on the others. By that point Dokes had gone through enough coke to buy Escobar a new hacienda. He did last 15 rounds in the hot Vegas sun against a fired-up Weaver so he could go the distance. I feel Dokes had better stamina & conditioning than Page (who didnt ) & I fancy him to take this but who knows what would happen between these 2. It could be an awful bore or an exciting battle but I think Dokes was more determined & enjoyed a war more than Page. :good What a waste of talent he was :-(
If you out these two in the ring together on their very best nights free of distractions you'd have a GREAT contest IMO. Dokes to do more and force his way back in when Page starts to dictate. 15 round decision for Dokes in a fight that has it all.
Greg Page might have looked sharper in some of his better performances, but he's one of these guiys that I'd never bet a nickel on in any fight.. Too unpredictable.
