No, you can't. Just because he wasn't a textbook fighter doesn't mean he was as awful as for instance Baer was, who swung like someone who boxed for the first time. At least Ali knew how to throw straight punches, hook etc.

I would say that from a textbook standpoint Baer was a lot closer to the mark. I could pick more holes in Ali's method than I could in his.

Marciano is a fighter that you really have to watch a lot of to realize that he was much more than he appears to be. He was way better defensively than first appears. I've always thought he had an iron chin but now I'm not sure how good his chin was because he did not get hit that often and almost never cleanly. Now a guy like Haglar, it's pretty obvious how good his chin is because of all the clean shots he took.

Just watched Max Baer last night. He looked like he had a lot of fun in the ring. That guy was a joker, now I know where Jethro got his sense of humor. I noticed right before he ko'd Schmeling, Max did a mini Ali shuffle in the far right corner. Check it out, I think he was playing around like a little kid. Gotta watch more Max.

I don't see that the smoking effected him. He gave it up, I assume. Everyone who knew him claims he was dedicated as a monk about his training and he certainly always came into the ring in terrific shape.

Small and short arms is fair, but the guy had a chin, a terrific punch, natural athleticism for boxing (in which torso movement is more important than running a fast 40), and stamina.

Leon Spinks would get my vote at heavyweight. Lauro Salas at any weight.

He's been mentioned before, but Vito Antuofermo had an armoured jaw, and that's about it. He developed enormous physical strength and muscular endurance, also becoming a vastly underrated defensive performer with the subtlest of head movements. But he was slow, short, short armed, a bleeder, and went far on conditioning, heart, toughness, and not much else.

Leon was an amazing athlete though, who wouldn't even be breathing heavily after a demanding workout. Big? No. Skilled? No. But at his best, he had excellent handspeed and punching power. So he was endowed with some natural gifts, which he passed along to his son. Brother Michael indicated that Leon was born with more ability than he himself was (hence Mike's dedicated stoic training regimen).

Frazier wasn't exactly text book either. No jab, no cross, the bob and weave isn't text book.. sub par defense
