Is Middleweight the "overall" best Boxing division ever?

WW is where its at, seems to be fighters are usually in there best physical shape at this weight, you got speed plus power

statistics will always point to MW being the best division due to the normal distribution, but its not that simple.

Since the weight of general population can be demonstrated in a bellshaped curve (normal distribution to boffins) then FW and HW will always be extremes with the fewer candidates. Fewer candidates means fewer top candidates (although there will always be elites in every division).

The population is highest in the middle of the bellshaped curve ie the most fighters are in the LW to LH section, so you'd expect a corresponding increase in the number of top fighters in that section.

But it dont always work that way. Besides which, average body size is on the increase so there should be a shift in that pattern in future years towards the LH side.

Off course in the past, average body weight was lighter than it is now, so currently, if we are looking at our entuire history's talent, we have the biggest body of past talent in the LW to MW section, accumulated when peoplewere simply smaller.

I think one thing that tips it in favour of LW is that most of the greats who fought in both peaked at 135 or were most effective at that weight. In a way it demonstrates how strong lightweight was, as so many of the legends in that dvision were able to achieve greatness in a higher weight class.

okay. I forgot light weight, my mistake. also some of the boxers mentioned didnt have their prime at middleweight. so lets put it this way....only great fighter, only prime @ middleweight to make it more clear.

Not sure if you forgot, or just decided he wasnt worthy of being mentioned but a guy called Benny Leonard fought at lightweight. Apparently he was half decent.
