Was just watching Valdez-Briscoe II, and I had assumed that Valdez was in the Hall. Just checked and was shocked to see that he was not. Is it me, or should Valdez be in? There are certainly less accomplished boxers than him in there. Any opinions?
I don't rate the Hall as a gauge, but if it WAS 'the hall of genuine ATGs' then no, Valdez wouldn't be in there for me if there were 150 boxers inducted so far.
I don´t see any problem with that...... Valdez was a very good fighter, competitive.....but not an ATG.... But obviously, like we always say...if McGuigan and others are in, Valdez should be too.....
Good point. I forgot about McGuigan. Also Michael Carbajal. Not sure how guys like that got in and a guy like Valdez doesn't. Not saying Rodrigo was an all time great, but he gave Monzon his toughest fights, had him on the deck, Ko'd Bennie Briscoe, and was an all around bad dude with great boxing skills. Would probably take out any of today's "champions" in about 2 rounds
Certainly deserving.Probably suffers in the minds of some of the ****s voting for not having a long title reig and, being neither irish, american nor a heavy.
Marlon Starling , Simon Brown , Sim Thompkins , Sanderline Williams (d man suffered some robberies ; look @ who he fought) , Willie Joyce , Juan LaPorte , Sumbu Kalambay , Jose Luis Ramirez and others also Rent , but , they did put Terry Norris & Ken Norton & Max Baer & most importantly Max Schmelling in . When d day will come , i m sure that they will also leave Tua & McCall outside but will introduce Lewis , Jones & Wladimir . And then they left Georgie Abrahams out . It was good having hhascup as a poster , but not in d IBHOF commission / board / committee / whatever . him and d rest of d Bert Sugars , like most of d idiots here , don't know what greatness is nor even what it's about . D vast majority of idiots will remain idiots no matter how hard u'll try .
Especially the latter two. Norton gets inducted in 1992, yet Valdez, like DeJesus and Escalera, remain on the outside looking in. Arguello was absolutely convinced the Snake Man belongs, and a strong argument can be made that Vita was a better lightweight than Ken was a heavyweight. Maybe it's just a matter of time and patience. Guys like McGuigan and Ingo lower the bar for everybody. (Maybe the IBHOF should just commit seppuku by inducting Leon Spinks.)
Hell, i wouldn't be surprised id CORY Spinks got in...Ricky Hatton...one day modern day crud like Brandon Rios...but not Rodrigo Valdez...atsch
Luis Rodriquez was a hair breath below Emile Griffith. If he gets a couple of those split decisions that went against him in the EG fights, plus finishes the Nino B fight he had won, he should be in the Hall of Fame too.
Rodrigo DEFINITELY belongs in! Many don't realize he turned pro in 1962 as a 16-17 year old in 1962! Continued fighting in Columbia til the late 60's-early 70's before his arrival into MSG. He was as over the hill as Monzon was when they fought their Quinella. Quite simply, one bad son of a *****. Downsides?: A notorious slow starter. Rumor has it Gil Clancy used to warn the refs that Valdez might look a little lethargic in the early going but not to worry. Prone to cuts. But none were so bad in his wheelhouse of prime to warrant stoppage. IMO he came loaded with power from both sides of the plate and, if you dropped him into ANY era, would raise hell with Greb, Walker, Zale, an aging Sugar, any of the 60's middles, et al! Quite simply, an ATG wrecking ball machine....
Thanks for responding SQ; always glean some boxing wisdom from your posts! After the two Monzon scraps Rodrigo had lost his moxie, plan and simple. A prime Valdez would have brutalized Corro, or banged him up real bad in route to a lopsided UD. As Bill Murray said: "That's the facts Jack"
