Would Mayweather be near as successful without his extraodinary reach?

Floyd's shoulder to fist reach is longer than Wlad Klitchkos', despite being 10 inches shorter.

 

That's a tough one to answer. Mayweather is great at long range, but I think this is part due to his judge of distance using his feet also. You could probably argue that even with an average reach, his judge of distance, and great athletic ability, he could probably still have the same success as he has had now.

Maybe he would be more willing/forced to engage/target opponents at short/mid range with a shorter reach. But like I said, his great athletic ability combined with his great footwork...I see him still being able to land his most effective punches (straight right, left hook, etc).

 

Yes, we've seen it when he fights in the pocket and reach is negated. He's a multi facated fighter, several dimensions to his game.

 

I doubt it, he would probably master a differnt way of fighting, people are born talented and skilled, like most athelites are naturally good at all sports. I dont think it would effect anything. Not arse licking him atall, just my opinion. Youve either got it or you aint.

This is what makes him counter so effectively off that shoulder roll...so no, he wouldn't be as good. Compare Cotto with his trex arms when he tries to counter with his shoulder roll.

this is not me having ago but personally i don't like these questions because if floyd had less reach he would have fought differently from day 1 etc. just my 2 cents.
