Is a fan of MMA going to have anything intresting to say? Not one good point so far. All I can say for it is MMA seems to be popular with the public.
This is all true, and this is why people should be sceptical of certain martial arts or combat sports being advertised as "street fighting/real-life self-defence system" ... or any gurus who try to tell you "what works" on the street. On the street you're just as likely to get a baseball bat to the back of the head when you're least suspecting it ... from the guy you ju-jitsu'd last weekend.
The honest truth is that both sports are very difficult. All combat sports are. I've boxed and also trained in JKD, which incorported ground fighting. Fighting on the ground is exhausting and it's damn hard against a bigger guy. There is no easy road in a fighting sport.
We've had discussions about religion on here, and a Great White v Crocodile thread once, so I don't think a once-off discussion about MMA is out of order, provided it's civil. :good
Very good post. Frank Shamrock, who by the way is a big boxing fan, once said that although he loves boxing he'd never seriously consider doing it since it's, in his words. "bone hitting bone for 10 rounds."
Honestly, if it were to get to a point where I'd feel unsafe walking down the street, I would not learn any form of fighting. I'd apply for a gun license because let's be honest, a gun brings instant 'respect.' Not that I'm that kind of guy, I probably would not even load it, but a gun would make anyone back off smartly. That, or I'd learn to run like the blazes. I would not, under any circumstances, engage a thug or group of thugs on the street.
i've been into prizefighting for over 50 years now ,did a lil boxing in the 1960's then in the 1970's trained a few fighters as well.i have no inttenton of watching that mma stuff. bigjake
The implication was that a fighter like buakaw (just adding kicks/knees/clinch,elbows) to the mix would give a great boxer troubles. Only a moron would infer otherwise.
