As a glorified European champion who benefited from hometown judging? How has Abraham got any longevity though?
but i personally feel there's poor criteria. ranking fighters based on numbers, without the context of the fights or opponents, is painting a very simple and misleading picture
Probably true but who knows the right context? This is a very subjective subject and who says which ones opinion is the right one? Some of it is easily recognizable with common sense but then there are always people who will question that - see someone like frankenfrank who ends up with Orlin Norris near his Top10 p4p all-time lists, or luf who created his own lineage and champions. So, who´s the one to say which criteria and context is the right one?
Criteria means nothing without closer scrutiny and a solid understanding of the subject matter though. I mean yeah, go right ahead and put Abraham and Sturm in the top 10, but few would ever agree.
no Mickey Walker???? Dick Tiger???? Winning percentage of opponents?--by this standard Roy Harris was a tougher defense for Floyd Patterson than Sonny Liston. Apparently it was where his criteria led him.
True but then again, who decides that? Who decides when it was put under scrutiny enough and who has a solid understanding of the matter at hands? And how do you prevent subjectivity? My point is that any list is subjective in the end and thus every list is equally reasonable as long as people have and stick to their criterias. Which does not mean that some lists are more valuable than others - which would be subjective again though. It´s not my list. I´ve not done any list for quite a while. I prefer critizising other peoples list for their shortcomings.
Yeah, I see your point. :good I'm just saying that stats when judged on face value can be terribly misleading. I'm the same with lists as well.
The Ring sucks..this modern day incarnation does anyway. Hopkins at #1 is utter bull****. It goes like this, 1. Monzon 2. Hagler 3. Greb 4. Robinson and you can haggle over the rest...but not Hopkins at #1. I don't even bother buying Ring anymore, in fact they've sucked since the Oscar de la Hoya butt-boys took over that magazine.
Sturm and Abraham is laughable and Hopkins at no1 is shocking. Golden Boy bringing the mags name through the **** with this list. Seeing Sturm next to Robinson on a list is pure comedy. Obviously Sturms loss (win) to ODLH must have played a part in his inclusion.
Back when the Ring was worth reading they did a list of the 20 greatest middleweights of all time that was much more reasonable. The top 10 went: 1. Harry Greb 2. Sugar Ray Robinson 3. Carlos Monzon 4. Marvelous Marvin Hagler 5. Charley Burley 6. Jake LaMotta 7. Tiger Flowers 8. Stanley Ketchel 9. Mickey Walker 10. Billy Conn
