Jones has big advantages in speed and reflexes. Charles is technically better and maybe able to time shots on Jones. It really is a toss up and would be a fascinating spectacle. 1 of the fantasy fights that most tickle my taste buds, the 2 best H2H LHWs for me. I give the edge to Roy with his speed and defence

Archie Moore got his ass handed to him by Roy Jones light in Charles Burley and never beat anyone as remotely quick, in fact having great problems with the quicker men of his time

Charley Burley would have gotten thrashed by the 1952 Archie Moore

Maybe, maybe not, but if he did it would be because Moore would have shedloads of weight on him, not because he was better. Archie couldn't sing Burley's praises high enough

I see a lot of mention of Jones being so fast. Charles was as fast. I think flashy is being mistaken for quickness.
As for this athleticism argument, boxers have gotten screwed up past 15 years with how good they look, instead of concerned with how fit they are. Trainers having less control of fighters is one reason.

Example: At weigh ins and photo ops, double biceps poses and showing off abdominal muscles is trend. Means nothing in fight, but I see people put up pictures of a fighter, and saying "He looks great, I like his chances better now..."

Charles went 15 intense rounds with Marciano, how much better condition can anyone be in? He did not have 6 pack on abs, but hit him in stomach and I bet it was like hitting a wall. Weight lifting has also gotten out of hand. It came about as common in boxing as 1980s came around, as way to supplement workout. Now fighters are training half for a fight, half for a bodybuilding conntest, or a male modeling photo shoot.

Jones looked better to some, in fight, Charles just has it all over him. Power, speed, fitness, chin.

Not nearly as quick, nowhere near, I suggest an eye test immediately

There's barely any quicker fighter's throughout history than jones let alone just at lhw.

Charles has a great overhand right and i've no doubt he could time someone as quick as jones but jones also had lightning reflexes so whilst charles might time him, i'd still expect jones to make him fall short and come back at him.

No one beats jones for me in this division. Foster comes closest though.

I tend to agree with this......

But....perhaps isn´t fair to say that because we don´t really have the footage of Charles when he was probably faster.....
Does anyone know from reports what they said about Ezzard´s speed in his prime years ???

    Jimmy Slade UD 10
    Chubby Wright TKO 7
Phil Muscato (56-19 at the time) TKO 6
Vicente Quiroz (3-1-2 at the time) TKO 6
Sonny Andrews (12-7 at the time) TKO 5

But Jones would be lucky to last 4 rounds?

    PowerPuncher,

Watch Charles vs Valentino or Walcott I 1949. His reflexes/handspeed is up there with anyone.

Roy's overrated at LHW. That said, he's the right kind of fighter to defeat Charles, though I'd never be confident in making such a pick. Not a fight I'd be willing to put money on. Gun to my head? Charles TKO11.

You may want to test your own eyes, Jones speed if greater is marginal, Charles is a better boxer with more power and a much better chin than RJJ not to mention he is better fundamentally you RJJ fans get flash mixed up with boxing.

that was his style. just because it relied heavily on athleticism doesn't make it flash. the comparisons to burley are fair and i'd be more inclined to call roy unorthodox than flashy.

jones had better speed, at his BEST charles may have had more power. may have. charles is incredibly technically speaking and light years beyond anything jones showed.

that being said, being technical doesn't make you more effective or even better. charles and jones are both incredible talents and the gulf in class is minimal at best. head to head, stylistically, i would favour charles but not by much
