    not hating on either man.. just pointing out a fact about their catchweight bouts. alot of people say floyd is contradicting himself for his views about the Pacquiao/Cotto fight because it was at a catchweight, and Floyd/JMM was fought at a catchweight. but Floyd never made a bigger fighter cut weight. (drain himself) as some would put it. , oscar @154 , cotto @154
    Pac- Cotto @145(for 147 title), Margarito @ 150(151?)(for 154 title)bull**** title anyways

    thoughts?

    this topic has been done to death really. Pac-Cotto was made at an agreed catch-weight that Cotto and Pac both made. Floyd made seemingly no effort to cut weight though he agreed to fight at that weight and simply paid Marquez for the missed weight. Without getting into the merits of if the weight cuts helped or hurt anyone, at worst it was disingenuous and unsportsmanlike.

    Catchweights are put in place for smaller fighters who don't want to move up and face a naturally bigger guy in his own weightclass.

    People get too caught up in catchweights. What you need to do is differeniate between a fighter handicapping another fighter and a fighter refusing to handicap himself.

    Fights where Pacquiao handicapped his opponent;

    2nd Morales fight - Morales fought Raheem at LW because he was having a lot of trouble making 130. Morales lost to Raheem and lost his negotiating power with Pacquiao. Team Pacquiao denied Morales' request for a 132 lb catchweight, forced him to come all the way down to 130 and put a large overweight penalty in the contract. Morales looked dead at the weigh in, and lacked energy in the fight

    De La Hoya fight - Not Pacquiao's fault. Hoya was definitely handicapped in this fight, but that was his decision

    Cotto fight - Despite already having fought at the full WW limit with great success, Pacquiao demanded a 145 lb. catchweight against Cotto. Cotto relented but did not want to put his title on the line. Cotto not only had to fight at the lower weight, but had to put his title on the line

    Margarito fight - Margo had a lot of trouble making 147 against Shane. Was suspended for a year and returned almost a year and a half later at 154. Was forced to come down to 150 against Pac. Margo refused to fight Cotto at 150 in his next fight as he said it was too difficult to make

    Cotto II - Despite already having fought at 150, Pacquiao refused fight Cotto at 150 and held firm on a 147 lb. limit even though Cotto had been fighting at 154 for two years. Cotto told Poochiao to go **** himself and will be fighting Mayweather at the full 154 lb weight limit

    Fights where Mayweather handicapped his opponent;

    None. The closest one is Corrales. However, the fight was at 130 where both fighters were champions. Not only that, but Corrales fought several more fights at 130 after the Mayweather fight.

    You could possibly add Mosley to the Pacquiao handicapped list as well. Mosley was having some trouble making 147 against Mayweather. His next fight was at 154. He then came down in weight to 147 to fight Pac. His next fight will be at 154.

    additional info.

    in pac-morales 1, pac was told to go up to super featherweight if the wanted to fight morales and he did as he should.
    for extra cash for murad muhammad, he agreed to have pac wear winning gloves without pac's knowledge.

    pac wanted 143 against cotto, cotto refused and countered with 145 or no fight at all and pac agreed to cotto's term of 145. fight before this for both, cotto weighed in at 146 and pac weighed in at 138. pac went up 7, cotto went down 1.

    That's great, but I thought having blood drawn was the reason he lost to Morales the first time. I guess it's back to being because of the gloves.

    Coming down in weight is harder than coming up in weight. Pac had already fought at the full 147 lb. limit once, yet still demanded a catchweight. There's no way around it, Cotto was handicapped by coming down in weight. I think he would've lost anyway, but he was still handicapped.

    Every time a much smaller fighter is pitted against a bigger fighter, he is well within his right to demand a catchweight. Even more so when he is the A-side. Catchweights are designed to make it a more even fight, not the other way around.

    That was the original idea, but that's not how it's always applied. When you go up in weight, you don't have to do anything different. In fact, you might have to drain yourself less. When you come down in weight, you have to work harder, and have to drain yourself more. It can even out when there is a huge weight discrepancy. Remember, when they first came up with these catchweights, there were only 8 divisions. There are now 17. The only reason that a guy, who already fought at 147 with great succuss, coming up from 140 would want a catchweight would be to handicap his opponent.

    Just becoz he had success at 147 doesn't change his actual size. Pac is a blown up lightweight, and thus fights with a built in handicap at welter. So it is a lil bit silly to suggest that Pac wanted to handicap someone like Cotto coming down one lb...the more viable reason is that against a dangerous naturally bigger man, you'd be stupid not to ask for a catchweight. Ie JMM asking Floyd for one.
