absolutely. let's list his prime knockout losses..

let's look at charles' prime knockout losses...TKO 8 Marshall (maybe pre prime but close) and KO 7 Walcott (maybe slightly past prime)

did charles face better competition? yes. did he demonstrate a concrete chin? **** no.

glass chin means getting knocked out. roy was only once even knocked DOWN. not sure how that applies here.

You seem to make my point for me, then contradict it.

At the age of 35? How many stoppage losses and total losses did Charles have at that age again?

Wait I thought your argument was Charles was nearly as quick as Jones are you stepping away from that now?

Anyway by the time Charles was 35 he was losing to gatekeeper level fighters, nevermind the elite, hence the point about Tarver/Johnson being moot

Each fought elite fighters in their own era, Charles fought more of his era and overall a better calibre but not as much as many rose tinted glasses would have us believe

A prime Jones and prime Charles at 175 would be a great contrast of styles but imo Jones has the stylistic upperhand...people talk about Jones' chin, but Jones had only ever been dropped one time before turning 35, and showed he could take a shot in the first Tarver fight which IMO took alot out of him....Watch the fight Jones took alot of clean shots on the ropes and didnt blink

Charles was dropped stopped and kayoed by smaller less gifted fighters in his prime also...the fight would be close but Jones gets the edge because he would have landed the faster, cleaner shots and his awkward style would take Charles a while to adjust to, and during that time Jones will be countering his jab until he pressed the action picking up points....people forget Jones was one of the best counterpunchers of all-time

wouldnt be a dominant performance but Jones beats Charles

he didnt fight much after he turned 35 but after losing his title, to Marciano he lost 14 out of 24 fights which included 5 knockout losses.

If we dont hold past prime losses against Charles, we cant against Jones either....In his prime though Charles loss to lesser fighters than Jones and softer punchers...

Jones handspeed was just flashy showboating most of time. Charles was hurt bad in the 2 marciano bouts, was not as good after. Last couple of years he did not even train as hard, was fighting for the money.
I can' t see how in any way, they compare. Charles and Jones fight, it would be all charles, if they fought 5 times Charles wins all 5.

apologies if it wasn't clear. i meant to list a series of lesser fighters than jones who lasted more than 4 rounds. if they can, why can't he?

how do you mean? watching him destroy toney, outclass hopkins, and embarass reggie johnson those are accurate, powerful and well placed shots.

at his best, it wasn't flashy showboating: it was brilliantly placed, blinding power punches

Reggie Johnson is not one to talk about, and Toney folded in his fight against Jones. Hopkins and others do not match up to Archie Moore and Walcott.

    I agree.

Roy Jones was one of the few boxers who could put some pop into those flurries. There were not Meldrick Taylor slaps they were real punches.

Watch Jones fights, yea he threw flurries every now and then, but when he reached his prime say 1996-2003, Jones threw hard fast shots, one of the few speed demons that did...no one besides a heavyweight tyson combined the speed and power of a prime roy Jones.

I respect your opinion but i Have to disagree, this is a prime for prime fight..both guys arent gonna have loses past prime held against them....Charles never seen the speed and power combo of Jones...Who was a better counterpuncher than anyone he has faced...Yes Moore, Bivins, and even Burley...Jones had that element of surprise with speed and power...Jones was only dropped one time before being 35, Charles was dropped several times and also kayoed to a lesser fighter than Jones.

Charles is too conventional, predictable and sometimes throws a lazy jab, doesnt always keep his right by his cheek and keeps his left too low for a fast fighter like Jones...it would be nip and tuck in the beginning, but with Jones shading early rounds with his awkward style and speed, and later on the fight wil get closer but Jones will be the one landing most of the clean harder eye popping shots....o and for the record Charles is still the greatest lightheavyweight ever
