If Pipino and Sugar Ray fought in 1977 or 1978,,,,,,,

The younger fighter would have ran through Sugar Ray, like the Russian T-37 Tanks from
World War II running over the Germans on the Eastern front.

    Sorry.
Younger version of Ray outpoints Pipino...older version of Leonard KO's Pipino.
    Good effort though.

I love the revisionist history where Sugar Ray is unbeatable and untouchable and Pipino is just some lucky journeyman slappy who would get outboxed by every eight round clubfighter from Hoboken if he didn't land a lucky shot.

A more intelligent and objective view would say that Leonard would smartly avoid engaging Cuevas in the direct manner necessary to hurt him with counter shots and would be content to win rounds and keep from getting his jaw broke and teeth loosened. If Pipino wound down- and his stamina was rarely questioned- then perhaps SRL would set down on his punches and take the necessary risk to go for a stoppage.

You'd swear reading some of posts, Pepe', that Leonard never lost a round until Montreal.

    D9,,,,,,,

Yes, I agree,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,The SRL Huggers forget that he actually got hit, and lost rounds in his career.

Pipino Cuevas was took much of a 'risk' to take a fight with in 1979 / 1980, especially in Mexico.

Over the 4-year period, starting in June 1976,,,,,,,,,,,,Pipino was unbeatable.

Leonard was wayyyy too smart to get caught by Cuevas..he'd have beheaded Jose by round 5 with the same kind of finishing left hook that he did in Boy Green with.

And you overrate cuevas quite a bit...Pipino was never an elite fighter.never against top tier types like SRL, hearns and Duran..and Benitez would have been too slippery for him as well..with that radar tuned to concert pitch.

Ray Leonard getting knocked into next week would hardly be a "cool" story. Esp. if Ray had to look in the mirror afterward and see this.

Mid-rounds TKO for Leonard. SRL was one of the most complete fighters to ever compete at the weight -- if you have any flaws, he will exploit it, since he is a versatile combatant that can choose how he fights.

Pipino has too many holes, and SRL will not be intimidated by his crushingly hard punches.

Can't see a plodding fighter with zero creativity getting past any version of SRL, truly one of the best to ever fight at that weight.

You'd have to be special to beat Ray, and Cuevas just wasn't. Good enough, but not Leonard good, and no top shelf craft. He chased dudes, he swung haymakers, he knocked them the **** out, and he ate their punches smiling all the way.

I disagree that his skills are underrated. They were EXTREMELY rudimentary for a good champion. And I'm a big Cuevas fan.
