I can buy it ON THE ELITE LEVEL where everyone has some degree of athleticism. Even someone who don't look at as athletic like margarito(e) had his own physical gifts of legendary stamina and iron chin.
Imagine the pressure of fighting in front of even a small crowd, everyone watching. A chance you can get K.O'd or humiliated in front of your friends and family and all those people. Then times that by 100 for the big PPV events. A lot of people break
its prob 50/50 or 60/40 in either direction mentality plays a huge part of a sport like boxing a physical freak and athletic specimen who has the best fundamentals possible can still lose if they get hit and do not have the guts or grit to fight back or get up from a knockdown and you see it, nobody ever gets big in boxing without having mental toughness say what you will about some guys who folded like lawn chairs in big fights or have a history of being mental midgets nobody who achieved anything worth a damn in boxing is missing a large part of the mental game now they may be missing components that prevent them from reaching the fullest of potential like Judah or prevent them from reaching greatness (not sure who to sight) my point is mental aspects are vital to boxing about as important as physical aspects
When I get a new kid in the gym, and they want to fight as an amatuer I sit them down and I tell them that all of this 80% Brain and 20% body stuff is bull****. If you're not prepared to give 100% brain and 100% body to Boxing, then you'll never get anywhere, and I won't waste my time with you. Boxing is a unique sport, you play sports; you don't play Boxing. You can't afford too.
i agree you cant teach taking a punch you cant teach someone to get up you cant teach someone to dig deep and grab that second wind when they are exhausted you cant teach someone to fight on with a broken nose, jaw, rib, nasty cut, closed eye as a coach or mentor you can teach fundamentals, good habits, condition them, help them drop weight right, form a strategy and motivate to a degree but when the bell rings there is lots that goes on that you may never be ready for its the ones who adapt and survive and can improvise or problem solve who move on how many times does that guy who is far superior in many assets lose to the tougher more determined guy? plenty
I can show you how to Box. I can't help you when you're in the ring, not really. I can't put your guard up, or force you to punch when your arms are exhausted. When someone's coming at you hard I can't step between the two of you. I've had guys, I put them in the ring and they turn their back when someone throws a punch, and those guys don't last. I've also had guys who box beautifully, but when they get tagged, they plant their feet, grit their teeth and punch the guy back. Those guys are cut from a Boxers cloth.
:good Ive coached before, not boxing however, but its the saddest to see someone whose got the right stuff so to speak fall short or under perform because they freeze or they tense up you see many guys who are great in the practice room or in the gym but cant put all the pieces together in competition with everyone watching i suppose there are guys just designed to shine in the moment and guys who just cant do it
What did you coach pal? When I was actually fighting, I enjoyed a crowd because my pride would tell me that there's no way I was going to be embarrased infront of a room full of people. I'm the same now I'm training actually, I hate to lose!
from experience its true....if your mind isnt right yiu wont perform well...determination and confidence is half the battle, whe you are fatigued all the technique and talent goes out the window...you panick, question yourself and forget things....a weak minded fighter can only make it so far based on talent, but a limited skilled guy with hell of heart and confidence makes it....difference between a guy Like Golota and Marciano
Well this will make me sound like the enemy because of MMA but i coached wrestling not the same as boxing but it requires similar disciplines of conditioning, foot work, hand eye coordination, balance, weight cutting and leverage i have boxed before but nothing serious more out of fun
couldn't agree more :good you can have the best ring iq, mental strengh, and all but if you don't have just ONE physical thing (stamina, chin, heart, etc.)...:dead ...and vice versa i'm sure there are exceptions but 9 out of 10, this is the case.
