There probably are better one punch power heavies but Mike had some great one punch knockouts. Besides, what's the point of having one punch power if you had the ability to land a 3-shot combo that was more devastating? I'm not quite sure who had the most overrated power.

Frank Bruno had massive power. I do remember seeing in a boxing magazine from the late 80's early 90's stating he had the most power.

Yeah he did, the Botha K.O was awesome.

I don't think his power was overrated at all almost everyone who faced him said he hit the hardest, Tony Galento did, Lou Nova did, Tommy Farr did, Max Schmeling did etc. Curtis Sheppard said Maxies sparring partners would try and appeal to the lighter side of Max in sparring and joke so he wouldn't get serious because his power was so punishing.

Best? Def. up there Hardest? No

Quite a few fighters put other fighters above him in punching power Max Baer despite being beaten so bad he quit said Max Schmeling hurt him more with 1 punch than Louis did in the entire 4 round fight. I think if he punched like Max Baer 1 shot, overhand right, inaccurate he wouldn't have too many KOs. He is kind've like Tommy Hearns in the sense his power gets blown of of proportion because he has other things that make his KO's so devastating i.e. speed, placement, timing etc.

The words "what if" always crop up when I think of Max Baer. We judge him on the basis of his being a screwed up, madcap sort of guy who never had his head on straight to maximize his great physical gifts..too bad I say. i wonder what would have been the case if he had taken his sport more seriously..if he had an Emanuel Steward type of trainer who would have taught him a few things to finesse his style a bit. Nothing too drastic or unnatural for him, but a few tweaks here and there that would have made him a little more sophisticated..I believe that he would have been considerably better than he was an d maybe surprisingly so. He had the physical gifts in spades..a chin, height, reach, a decent amount of foot speed..He's always been one of my favorite fighters and whenever we have a "what if" fight on this forum, I always think of what a really formidable fighter he could hae been.

Michael Moorer's power was overrated even at lightheavy. Eddie Mustafa, Saad Muhammad, Michael Spinks and of course, Bob Foster all had superior power. Galindez could hit harder as well.

  9. No that has nothing to do with it. Foreman punched in the wrong way and still managed to knock grown men to the floor. He dropped guys with awkward arm punches and punches thrown from the hips. Holyfield said "George hit me harder than any fighter." Frazier,Norton and all those guys got up because they had heart. Mormeck got up from Wlad's punches. Fighters always get up. Very rarely is there one knockdown to end the fight.

  10. None are overrated. We never fought these guys. All of them are huge punchers. Some more so then others but who cares? Adamek would murder everyone on this board.

With that train of thought lets just basically shut down the board - we've never fought anyone we are on here speculating and debating about.

Where's the fun in that tho!?!?!?

Louis put Braddock's teeth right through his mouthpiece, into his lip, that's power.

  13. It's ok to speculate about 2 fighters facing each other but how can we say which fighter hit harder? It's like asking which fighter smelled the best or had the softest hair.

I agree, people are usually talking crap when they say 'he didn't hit that hard', 'his power is overrated'.

Sometimes it's fair to point out that this guy or that didn't actually KO many good fighters, or rarely did fight-turning damage with single shots, or only stopped washed-up fighters .... but to contradict the actual fighters who went in the ring and came out saying "that guy hits like a mule kicks" , "that guy has serious power", "no one ever hit me harder" or whatever is just ridiculous.

That was my impetus to throw out Baer as being overrated in the power department. Arguing relative power, outside of proven finishing ability, gets to be tricky, unless you have faced the different fighters in question.
