We can still look at the quality of opposition both chin and quality wise. We can look for common opponents and their career stages, we can look at visible results, we can produce quotes from opponents (particularly those that have fought numerous well known hitters), we can do a lot of things.

Sure it's still speculation, but over time actual bouts that happened have been hard enough to pick let alone fictionals.

I've enjoyed the back and forths in this thread as you see both sides of the debate and get a feel for where you might stand. There's some fine points made in this thread.

I'd like to think seeing a guys fights and his record give me a better idea of what he's got power wise vs his peers than how soft his hair is or how he smells. e.g. I'd like to think i'd have more chance of choosing the more powerful puncher out of Howard Davis and Edwin Rosario than which one smelt the best or had the softest hair.

I will say that i remember one guy from the 80's not having a bath for a week in the hope it would put his opponent off. Fair chance he didn't smell the best out of the two

  3. I see what you mean but whatever. I just never trust what the fighters say about who hit hardest because if they dont like the guy they wont give credit etc.
I always thought that we should just put fighters in general categories like "hard puncher" "boxer-puncher" "boxer"
As far as I'm concerned, Foreman,Shavers,Baer,Tyson,Wlad Klitschko,Vitali,Bowe were all punchers. Who hit hardest? Who knows?
Plus, what if these guys have an off night? What if they dont punch hard on a certain night for whatever reason? It's all impossible to really determine but I guess it's fun to just decide based on what we DO know.

I hear you about what fighters say lol. Some pretty wild (and biased) things come out of them.

One thing i will say is that when they reach a consensus (rarish admittedly) such as say, with Earnie Shavers power i sit up and take notice. The list of heavyweights (Ali, Holmes, Bugner, Cobb, Lyle, Norton etc) that rate him the hardest hitter they ever faced is massive, and some of them faced some murderous hitters. Actually this might warrant a thread in it's own right with some quotes.

I disagree that Marciano should be in the circle of three.
One only has to go back and look at the faces of the boxers
that fought him after the bout. They all look like actors
auditioning for a role in the horror classic TV series
    "Schock Theatre".:patsch:-(

Wrong comparison. No one can put down Joe Frazier for the 10 count, not even Marciano.

If that's the way we're comparing, how much monster punches that Archie Moore took from Rocky Marciano before he was finally put down?

And how much longer did Floyd Patterson finished Archie Moore the next year onwards?

By you logic Floyd Patterson must have punch harder than Rocky Marciano!:silly

Marciano was a harder puncher pre 1954. From 1954 on, his style changed. He became more of a volume puncher, and in doing so, sacrificed some of his punching power.
