The Johnson fight was a clear win for Ottke. Pretty good since the ancient Johnson of today is the best win for the worlds no.2 SMW in Lucian Bute.
He wasn't the worst boxer. But his fight against Reid is one of the biggest jokes EVER to happen to boxing...
Well, he must have been able to do something right, 34 victories is 34 victories, no matter how much he was supported by German corruption
I have Ottke there with Joe Calzaghe as it comes to meaningless title reigns. Okay, Joe finally unified against Kessler which was good and meaningfull fight:goodBut then that embarrassing show down with Hopkins.:-( I dont ever remember Ottke being Arrogant and cocky like Calzaghe thou(neither man really had any business to be) I might be wrong but I dont remember Ottke calling himself as the greatest of this era Like Calzaghe.Ottke just did his thing and let his fists do the talking:bbb But over all I remember Joe and Sven like two berries.
Hopkins was a great fighter, Calzaghe was a great fighter, Calzaghe just fought a bit better. It was a good match between good boxers, no embarassment :hat As for Ottke, he seemed like a nice and friendly guy, yes. But that just contributes further to the pure humor behind his career
Calzaghe was a proper champion, Ottke wasnt. Admittedly Cal was a minor world title holder, but he was definetely a successful holder and HOFer of that title. Ottke was basically dethroned early in his career and was never a champion after that - thats the problem most people have with him, he lied about winning several of his fights and he lied his way into HOF. Someone ought to update his wiki page, this guy is as bad as Povetkin.
whilst its true that Joe took lots of **** opponents who basically dived at the right time for the Welsh ref to stop the fight, Joe Calzaghe did fight and beat some decent fighters and CRUCIALLY, he never actually lost his fights in reality. The worst crime you can say about Calzgahe is that only half of his defences were proper title defences, so he didnt really notch up 21 defences in reality, it was more like a dozen. Whereas Otke lost several of his fights in reality, and thus never notched up more than a few defences becasue he never had a title after Glen Johnson. In a nutshell, in reality Joe kept his title however minor it was, Otkke didnt. A minor world title is more valid than two major world titles that you don actually own.
Ottke was the no. 1. Calzaghe no.2. If you seriously believe Johnson was robbed against Ottke you are a novice boxingfan. Furthermore Ottkes titlerun was at least as good as Calzaghe's untill Joe unified. The amount of unfair hate Ottke receives is staggering. Its probably because of his non-anglon heritage. SMH.
