Bonavena to Ali - "You big chicken"

He was a bit fatter than Ali and still 8 lbs lighter , so what did u prove here ? Oscar virtually always fought @ over 200 lbs so u'd argue that he was about as big as Foreman as well ? and Foreman was only d slightest of slights bigger than Ali .

 

It was Oscar who laid an egg.

I remember this very well. Bonavena was n't talking so much after Ali stopped him in their fight

There's a pic of his condition while it still was in its relaxed state , just so u could show him more empathy .

 

As Jose Torres put it in one of his books, "Qscar Bonavena had balls"..I always had an affinity for the great Argentine fighters..Monzon, Galindez, and though he wasn't as great as these two, I always liked Bonavena. He was more colorful than Carlos and Victor, if not as great.

One thing about Oscar Bonavena,,,,,,

I did get to see him in person, in New York City back in 1972.

Though he had a thick-body,,,,, he was really not that big. Maybe a shade over 5' 10" and about 210 lbs.

He did have broad shoulders, a thick-neck, massive arms and a thick trunk,,,,,,

He resembled 'a mason or brick-layer',,,,,, or an early 1970's football 'fullback',,,,,,

When he took on Muhammad Ali, he came in to that bout in very-good condition.

At age 28, the 5' 10" 'Argentinian Bull' was 'a-trim-and-ready' 204 lbs.

And, he was no 'bum in hibernation', the guy was an active fighter with 7-bouts in the
previous 12-months, and was rated the #3 Heavyweight by Ring Magazine.

After the fight, the scoring was a little unbalanced, with Ring Magazine scoring it
10-3-1 for Muhammad Ali, but many at Ringside including (Dick Young, New York Daily News)
had it much closer at 8-5-1 for Ali.

Round 9,,,,,,An unbelievable round, with Oscar, after getting pounded and staggered during the
middle of the round,,,,, nails Muhammad Ali with a short left hook at the 2:32 mark, and has Ali
out on his feet as he wobbles back to the ropes. Oscar tries, but couldn't find one more big hook.

Interview with Joe Frazier after the fight; 'I fell asleep after the 7th Round. It was the dullest fight I ever saw.'

 

What do you mean what did I prove? I was simply making an observation,you went on about size.Which ever way you look at it Oscar wasn't a small heavyweight for his day.He was a powerful,strong proposition for anyone.

 

He surely wasn't a big heavyweight 4 his day .
Much smaller than Ali , but u ignore it like every other fact , don't u ?
Strong proposition 4 any1 ? not even during his own era .
Liston , Ali , Foreman . Was he a strong proposition 4 them ?
Would he have been a strong proposition 4 , say , David Tua ? James Smith ? Donovan Ruddock maybe ? Frank Bruno ? Hasim Rahman ?

Oscar is a 'big heavyweight',,,,,,,and usually fights between 205 and 210 lbs.

Clearly, Oscar is one of the 'strongest' heavyweights on the boxing scene today.

His strength, is the ability to get inside and wear down his opponents with constant pressure.

His hard clubbing punches do take their toll on his opponents, as they numb their body and arms, preventing them from making a late-charge in the fight.

 

How did i forget Zora Folley ? must have been a huge giant with humongous size and enormous strength . 4 Bonavena he was .
Ring Magazine were full of **** , or otherwise they didn't sell .
