I'm one of these people that believes a fighter should earn their title shot, so, it always annoys me seeing a fighter gain a title fight after having lost their previous fight. Whether it be politics or money involved someone is getting foisted on the public that should not be if commissions were doing their job. Anyways, who had the most consecutive losses to gain a title fight? I have 4 condidates who either had a lotta luck, circumstance or shenanigans owed to them.

    1) Bud Smith - has to have the record. 4 losses on the trot before being stopped in 11 by Joe Brown for the title. But hold on, while Bud was champ he lost 3 consecutive 10 round non-title bouts, then lost his title to Brown. This was a rematch and for all we know there may have been a rematch clause in the contract. So, Bud gets a bye here.

    2) Jersey Joe Walcott - received a title shot twice by having lost his last 2 bouts. Gets a title fight with Ezzard Charles for the vacant title after being beaten twice by Joe Louis. I can see this. He had 2 really good showings against Louis and it was for the vacant title. But the second time around he lost a 10 rounder to Rex Layne and a 2nd fight with Ez for the title before receiving another shot and winning it from Ez. A lot of luck for Joe seeing as how from reports, their fights were not exactly stimulating. Looks like Layne got screwed on this one as he was maintaining a good rating.

    3) Domenico Tiberi - what business did he have getting a title fight with Koichi Wajima? 2 consecutive losses - a 10 round loss to Jose Duran and a 6th round stoppage loss to Tom Jensen. Wajima must've been scraping the bottom of the barrel for an easy 1st defense.

    4) Jorge Lujan - Hands down this is it for me. Lujan got several title fights for any and all WBA titles. But get this, he loses his 118 lb. title to Julian Solis, gets a title fight with Solis' conquerer Jeff Chandler - loses that one, loses a 10 rounder to Roberto Rubaldino and those 3 losses get him a title fight with WBA (natch) 122 lb. champ Sergio Palma. Man, Lujan had to have had a direct line with the WBA's president.

I'm sure there are a lot more if anyone has some on the tip of their tongue???

Susumu Hanagata found himself in a world title fight with Canto despite losing back to back fights with erbito salavarria at the end of his career.

Iran Barkley seemed to be the go to guy for title fights after losing to Duran.

Good shout, but despite the official decision he cane out of the Helenius fight with the reputation of a winner.

Mosley lost to Floyd and looked like utter dog**** against Mora before fighting Pacqiuao.

    Scartissue,,,,,,,,

Good call on Jorge Lujan,,,,,,,,,,,,another WBA 'junior division' poster boy..

Lets not forget,,,,,,,,, Jorge "I'm From Panama" Lujan also got a shot at WBA Champion Alfonso Zamora in 1977,,,,
,,,,,,by losing 2 out of 3 fights prior to his Championship shot.

Jorge must have had rented an apartment above the WBA Headquarters in Panama City.

When Hasim Rahman fought John Ruiz for the WBA Heavyweight title, he was coming off 2 defeats and a draw in his previous 3 bouts :bbb

Jose Antonio Aguirre has had an interesting ride in this regard:

    - Suffers back-to-back KO losses to Eric Ortiz and Robert Vasquez. His reward? A shot at Brian Viloria's WBC belt.

    - Comes back from the Viloria defeat to beat Francisco Soto by SD (Soto's record was 8-16-3). His reward? A shot at Ulises Solis' IBF belt.

    - Loses three on the spin (not in great company either), on top of the Solis defeat, before beating Javier Romano (record 4-6-1). His reward? A shot at Gilberto Keb Baas' WBC belt.

He is knocked out by Keb Baas.

Only the first of these actually involved consecutive losses coming into a title fight, but I thought I'd highlight all three just to show how absurdly easy it is to challenge for a title these days.

    How about this-

Some guys win one (usually vs. a less than great fighter) then lose a big fight (usually badly), then repeat. Ricardo Mayorgo has been doing this since 2003. He lost to Cory Spinks in a close fight, he beat Eric Mitchell W10, lost to Felix Trinidad LKOby8, beat Michele Piccirillo W12 for vacant WBC JWW Title, lost to DeLaHoya LKOby6, beat Vargas WMD12, lost to Mosley LKOby12, beat Michael Walker KO9, and lost to Cotto LKOby12.

Or how about guys like Hasim Rahman? Beat a bunch of bums, lose badly in a big fight, repeat.

Rahman lost the Lineal HW Title to Lewis, lost to Holyfield LTD8, Drew with Tua D12, then lost to Ruiz (WBA HW Title). After losing to Maskaev (for the 2nd time) he beat 4 bums, fought a NC vs. Toney (3 rounds, 1st fight was a draw), then was destroyed by W. Klitschko. After W.K. he knocked out 5 bums now he is fight Povetkin in a Title fight. WTF?

I'm from the Baltimore area, was a big Rahman fan, but he doesn't deserve the chance he is getting, he didn't deserve the last chance he got either.

Yeah, since he lost his title and everyone realises he wasn't a relentless powerpunching destroyer after all, Mayorga has been this era's go to guy for an easy "make me still look good" win for the aging fighters that made their names in the 90s that wanted to make it look like they were still fighting legit top contenders.

Doesn't always quite work out, but still.

    Brian 'Lantern Jaw' London

In the 22-bouts previous to fighting Muhammad Ali in August 1966,,,,,

    He posted a 'fine record' of 12-10-0 (7 KO's) ,,,,,,,and was KO'd '4' times.

A win by Disqualification (W Disq. 7) over Amos Johnson in June 1966 clinched a Championship bout for Brian,,,,,,,:patsch
