Okay, people seems to have a lot of opinions on the guy. But why stick to opinion, when one can stick to logic? He's both overrated and underrated at the same time. People who say he sucks don't really know what they're talking about, he had an impressive record and, while it may not be some special opponents he fought most of the time, then it at least qualifies him as an effective fighter against a lot of different styles. Besides, for his age, he made a very impressive effort against Joe Calzaghe, who at the time recently had beat Mikkel Kessler (that fact alone, even when not looking at his perfect record, makes Joe Calzaghe a top-tier fighter). However, Hopkins is also far from being one of the best ever. He didn't really beat any top-tier fighters. He did beat Roy Jones Jr. (out of prime), but we all know that Roy Jones Jr.'s boxing style simply didn't age quite as well as that of Hopkins'... Can't we all just stop the bull**** and just agree that Hopkins didn't suck and just was a very good fighter, even if not among the best? :bbb
He should just retire before his record goes any worse. It's a shame that he gathers losses now, it will ruin his otherwise very good legacy.
Hopkins never sucked, but he is very overrated. He has never beaten an A level fighter at his natural weight. His best wins Tito: Career welterweight (albeit a big one). 1 career fight at 160 against ****ing William Joppy before Hopkins beat him. i do say this though, Hopkins was a huge underdog. Oscar: Career welterweight. 1 fight at 160 before the Hopkins fight, and he looked like **** getting clearly outboxed by Sturm...and Oscar was actually winning early on. Tarver: Hopkins completely outclassed him, but Tarver was never A level. Got outboxed by Eric Harding. Was getting outboxed again before he KO'd him in the rematch. Went 1-1 vs Glen Johnson. His only claim to fame is KO'ing Roy Jones(in what was a near perfect shot. He gets full credit for that KO from me) Winky: Career 154 lb fighter 2 fights above 154, and he fought him at 170....and Winky was very much in the fight. Great name, but the weight takes away much of the luster. Pavlik: Career 160 lb fighter. Never had A level talent anyway. (Again, Hopkins was an underdog, and he gets credit for exposing a limited B level fighter) Another reason he gets a ton of hate, is because he fights so dirty and negatively.
If we go by tapes and fights. Prime Hopkins gives any fighter difficulties, and would beat many. But some want to only go by boxrec.
Fighters with the physical attributes AND ring IQ will always beat him. He is not varied enough, and his game plan of dirty fighting gets neutralized( Dawson's right hook took away his run in with right hand and grab strategy)
I totally agree with you. After all, there is a reason why Hopkins never lost during his prime, and dominated the Middleweight division for a full decade, from 1995-2004.
hopkins is an all time great who acquited himself well against an elite fighter last night. overrated? sure.
Hopkins was in his prime when he fought RJJ the first time and he lost that fight. So he did lose in his prime
Hopkins still lost to RJJ when he was in his late 20's, that aint green Hopkins was at his physical best years. Hopkins mastered the craft later on during his reign though, and rematch with RJJ would have been alot closer.
