They seemed to both have doofus skills. I always was left with the impression neither was very intelligent. Am I off base here?
Yes. Jerry Quarry was known to be a pretty intelligent guy from what I've read...of course multiple head shots over the course of a career took it's toll, but shouldn't be used as a basis for coming to the concluson that he was a "doofus".
I know they both slipped into dementia in later years, I'm speaking of when they were top rated in their respective divisions.
I met Jerry Quarry in 1970,,,,,,,,,, in New York at a Country Club Golf Outing,,,,,,,,,,, He was,,,,,,,,,,a great guy,,,,,,,,,,, It was the father Jack Quarry,,,,,,,,,,that did them both in,,,,,, He used them as tools,,,,,,,,,,for financial gain.
This is true, I met Jerry and Mike both were very intelligent, the father Jack was a rough cold guy and he affected Jerry's career early on. Jerry later developed under better trainers but always suffered from that controlling father syndrome and it affected his relationship with men. Jerry Cooney suffered from the same abuse and control and lack of confidence.
Correct,,,,,,,,,,, Why would anyone start a thread that knocked a couple of good hard-working entertaining fighters,,,,,,,,,that complimented the sport of boxing. Let's end this thread,,,,,,,,
There's plenty of Jerry's televised color commentary from behind the microphone during the 1970s to evaluate his intelligence by. Norton-Middleton, Shavers-Clark II, Duran-Fernandez, Foreman-Denis and numerous other broadcasts that he contributed to are readily available on youtube. Any younger posters not familiar with JQ can judge his mind for themselves. For whatever it's worth, I enjoyed his input. Jerry and Mike were brain damaged from an early age as a result of being pushed into boxing before they were old enough to validly consent (something they were able to articulate while still lucid). They were in no way deficient in terms of native intelligence, but essentially victims of a father who lived his dreams vicariously through his talented sons and used those sons as meal tickets. Gregorio Benitez was another who did this. When are we going to start applying the age of consent concept to things like whether or not a child can choose to get his or her developing brain bruised repeatedly by deliberate blows to the head in competition? (These people would be alive and well today if not for their pushy fathers. Ditto Greg Page, who should've been allowed to play basketball instead at Louisville.)
Well, definitely uneducated. Your assignment now is to view the entirety of this bout in sequence and return to us with a detailed description of all 12 rounds to prove you have done your homework. (We've all long since thoroughly familiarized ourselves with this match, so we'll know instantly whether or not you've actually watched it all. If you falsely claim to have seen it through, and are lying, George Foreman will kick your ass for shortchanging Jerry.) Jerry was one of the first boxers that volunteered to do a serious study on the effect of punches on the brain. This study was back the the 70's and I believe published in Sports Illustrated...with photos. What the test photos showed in boxers such as Quarry....was a separation of the 2 sides of the brain down the middle. Later photos released of Ali's brain shows the same affliction. But Quarry stated "I would do it the same all over again" even though he knew the 70's wars had damaged him.
:-scaredas::scaredas: I didn't know it either , and I didn't know what Ren once posted , combined with Nightcrawler's affirmation of it , about d chromosome 21 deffect that make some more suspect than others . Both facts may still b related . Some ppl like McCall , Chuvalo , Antonio Tarver and much less surprisingly , George Foreman , r probably truly durable in d sense that they got damaged less than others . McCall & Tarver even went through n additional drug abuse , but still speak clearly .
I used to wonder if you were a troll. I admit it was tight, but for you to suggest this tells me your full of ****. Good trolling, if thats a good thing to say
