You saw a completely different fight to me then.

Vitali swept the early rounds but he missed far too many shots allowing chris to counter and walk him down. At the time of his retirement I had it 5-4 in rounds.

Vitali looked bad that night and his lack of inside game was terribly exposed.

I think byrd was better than young also.

By those scores vitali could have finished on his feet after twelve and won after losing the championship rounds, utter bull.

 

Am I totally misreading you or are you saying Walcott is not as good as Sam Peter?

 

V.K. is too tall and is also a very good mobile fighter.... Joe Wally would have trouble avoiding V.K.'s long-ass jab while trying to jab his own way in on the massive V.K.... Joe Wally either runs for his life and drops the decision, or gets stopped late by the also great V.K.

Why do you assume that Walcott would fight Vitali's fight and get into a jabbing contest. Walcott not only had head and torso movement similar to Byrd, he had much better lateral movement. Vitali is going to be fighting a guy who will be moving around like no one he ever fought, fighting in and out, and he's going to be seeing punches from angles he has never seen in his career.

I just watched Vitali against Byrd again, and I have changed my mind here. I think Walcott has a hellava shot. Vitali's slow long-armed punches are not likely to hit a much quicker, and slick little guy. He missed the stand in one spot Byrd all night. Why a moving target is going to make it easier for him eludes me.

Also, Walcott was probably naturally a bigger man than Byrd, weights to the contrary. Walcott was all muscle at 195. Byrd was obviously carrying a lot of extra weight. I can't see Walcott making 175 ever in his later years.

And Walcott had a dangerous punch.

I switch my vote and take Walcott over Vitali, at least the Vitali of the Byrd fight.

 

one--I scored the fight 7 to 2 in rounds for Vitali. That comes out to the same as the three judges, plus Lederman on the tape of the fight, with both Larry Merchant and Jim Lampley also saying at the end that Vitali was so far ahead he only had to stay on his feet to win.

What vulgarity, but he did look like feces--He won round after round because Byrd was not throwing punches. I noticed how slow Vitali's punches were. He might indeed do better against the bigger, slower guys of the modern era than he would have done with the smaller, quicker guys of earlier eras who had superior lateral mobility, torso movement, and especially head movement. The Byrd fight showed that torso and head movement all but nullified Vitali's attack. Byrd didn't have the offense to carry the fight to Vitali. But that would not necessarily be the case with fellows like Dempsey, Walcott, Marciano, etc,

or perhaps even Johnson and Jeffries.

Vitali's size makes him tough h2h, but I think I have been overrating him.

 

V.K. is simply too big and strong for Joe Wally and V.K. pushes / forces him to retreat, run and box without Wally really settling in on his punches and then seemingly fights a "Survival" fight against the hulking and great champion from the Ukraine....

V.K. proves too much for Joe Wally via a time machine... Wally of 1947 to 1951 really doesn't do all that well against a 2003 to 2012 V.K. any way you slice the pie.....

Wally of all 6' tall and 194 solid pounds of muscle just can't hang in there for 12 to 15 rds with a monster like V.K... Wally's only hope is to reduce the exchanges and run like hell...

Look, FFS, Joe Wally was a great all around boxer / puncher for a man just UNDER 200 pounds.... Joe Wally has over a dozen losses on his Hall of Fame record and was also KO'd by lesser men than dude's like "Louis and Marciano" during his career that ended in '53 via 1st. round KO to Marciano.... Wally is an ATG pound-4-pound ex-champion, but he ain't gonna get past V.K.

Byrd massively outlanded vitali from 5-9. He walked him down and made him miss. Round 8 I could see going to vitali but 5, 6, 7 and 9 are clear byrd rounds imo.

Jersey joe is a bit too cute and brave to take this imo. Has he successfully fought in the pocket as byrd did?
