Larry was a bit special and better for me in lots of aspects compared to Lewis. Lewis had a great jab but Larry's was better. Holmes also had great movement and was pretty much impossible to knock out in his prime. I have Holmes at No.4, Lennox at No.8.
Trolling Aside. Lennox Lewis to this day is still the most underrated champion alongside Larry Holmes. People talk about Holyfield and Tyson as if those were his biggest achievements. On paper ya, but take a look fellows 1- The oldest most shot fattest grease infested version of Lewis tko6 Vitali and trust me since all of you are boxing fans, if the fight had gone on? It won't be a tko6 it will be a tko8 or a ko9 for Lewis. Lewis lost early rounds ya,but that's a lewis tradition. He was losing early rounds to Zeijo breadmaker for Christsake. And he looked way more in trouble against a Prime Briggs then he did against Vitali. He got that fight. Due to his advanced age that was a massively underrated win 2- People downrate his win against Andrew Golota so much it's not even funny. People **** talk golota now calling him a glass chin pole and all that **** but the truth is heading into the Lewis fight, he was a 3 to 1 favorite and dominated Riddick Bowe for back to back fights. He had massive ability, and talent. He became a mental midget, but he sure didn't look scared of anything fighting Bowe 3- Ko Ruddock was a huge win as well. People yet again like to claim Ruddock was beyond shot, not true. He was still a dangerous punch and Lewis took him to school. Also if Tyson shot Ruddock, then Lewis shot Golota, making tyson's best win after prison meaningless 4- People act like Tyson was some god dman scrub heading into the Lewis fight. He still had power and still had B rated skills. I will favor that version of tyson against any non Kbro in this era...... so . 5- People just seem to FORGET lewis was robbed against Mccall People like to talk about how lewis was 'out' THE LION IS NEVER ****ING OUT. (other then rahman 1) He was up on his feet and got cheated, the ref was Don King's boyfriend, even the HBO commentators said 'THIS REF IS A FIX, HE IS A KNOWN FIX' Lewis could have hugged Mccall for 2 minutes and survived the round. Nobody in the history of boxing gets away from a Lennox Hug.. nobody 6- Prime Shannon Briggs was a ****ing nightmare. 7- David Tua was an amazing fighter, he was ranked #2 by every single ranking system heading into the Lewis fight. That guy was straight up dangerous and the biggest puncher since Tyson Lewis made him into a little wkillle boy and spanked him with his shrong all night long Yet all people cry about is how boring the fight was.... 8- Michael Grant was the original seth mitchell he got ktfo out of this world He had amazing abilities, lennox ruined more careers then anyone it is what it is.. Lewis I rank 2nd behind Ali (maybe even first)
:deal. Judgedread seems to be against Lewis. Im fine with that but if your not gonna give a real reason to why Holmes beats Lewis then don't even comment. Personally I think a prime Holmes wins H2H. His jab was better than Lewis (marginally) which was one of Lewis best weapons. This would also neutralise his straight right to a certain degree, which gives Lewis huge disadvantage. Lewis could make up for this with his surprisingly good inside game for just a short fighter, however Larry would be aware that he would need to get in and out quick. I think it would be a pretty boring fight if I'm honest. Larry starts fast and goes 5-2 through 7 with Lewis getting through to Larry late on and maybe rocks him a few times but wouldnt be able to stop him. in a close decision (8-4/7-5) with a lot of close and indecisive rounds. Lewis is slightly greater in my eyes due to his achievements of beating every fighter he faced, having a slightly better resume, as well as beating the next ATG prime heavyweight way out of his own prime. Holmes-post Tysons career helps him catch right up too Lewis with his wins over mercer and spirited efforts against McCall and Holyfield and makes it razor close (enough for me to even put him above Lewis depending how I'm feeling on the particular day I do a top 10 list) both alternate between 5 and 6 on my list.
I have Lewis at #1 Peak H2H & #2 Heavyweight ATG. I put Larry at #9 Peak H2H & #8 Heavyweight ATG. I'll add some details later... (watching South Park with my dad).
I say this poll should be made public so we can see who voted for what. Then we can have a talk and they can try to explain to me in all seriousness why they think Holmes achieved more than Lewis. Then they could explain how he beats Lewis. Then we can all laugh at their stupidity and show them the Witherspoon fight.
It is a public poll, just click on the numbers in the results Don. :good What seals Lennox's superiority for me is their performances in their best wins: Lewis Obliterated Golota Obliterated Ruddock Virtuoso against Morrison Holy I, wide 9-3 UD (correct scoring) Vitali, second worst shape of Lennox's career, came back from adversity to win brutally. Holmes Norton, barely scraped this by a **** hair, despite Norton being several years Past-Prime. Witherspoon, didn't deserve decision, see my post in scorecard thread. (here) Cooney, was behind when he stopped the gassed overrated hypejob "White Hope". Mercer, good win, but this was a green Pre-Prime Mercer, clearly not the one of '95/'96. Shavers I, good win, but Shavers was extremely limited; see his '77 fight with Zombie Ali. Also, Lewis never ducked anybody, where Larry ducked several of his best possible opponents, plus a Witherspoon rematch, & a Truth Williams rematch.
Never was one for understanding polls. For some reason i always find that that Larry supporters use the Mercer fight as an example of how Lewis fights and why Larry would win. Performances against anyone when Lewis was at his best get swept under the carpet.
huh?? Norton was coming on strong late in the fight, but Holmes convincingly won that fight. don't let the judges fool you
Great respect for both of these heavyweights. They both achieved alot. Lennox Lewis beat everyone he ever fought. He was avoided by some of the name heavyweights in the 90s. That wasnt by accident. It had something to do with the fact that he was 6-5 240lbs with one of the most wicked righthands ever to grace the division. He could box and had a tough defense. Not exactly the kind of guy they were beating down the door to fight.Even Holyfield who was a great warrior didnt take on Lennox until he had to. I give Larry Holmes the edge because he ripped off 20 successful title defenses. He had that consistancy. During that run the true boxing fan knew Larry Holmes was THE Champion. It didnt matter what other belts were floating around. Holmes didnt lose to lesser fighters like an Oliver McCall or a Rahman. Though he was hurt by a Snipes or a Weaver he was always able to rally back and win. When the term Heavyweight Champion of the World is uttered I will always think of Larry Holmes first. He was the Champion I most admired.
Larry won 20 consecutive title fights over a span of eight consecutive calendar years, something unprecedented for an undefeated professional. He was better against Mercer than Lennox was, and MUCH better against McCall in Oliver's first bout after taking Lennox out (at age 45). Aside from peak Holyfield (when Larry was 42) and peak Tyson (when he was 38 and coming off an 18 month retirement) he never sustained a really conclusive defeat. The case might be made that he could be 73-2-0 (albeit controversially). Lennox did defeat every opponent he ever fought, but he twice lost the title on a single punch to two different mediocre contenders, down for the count the second time. This is akin to Snipes dethroning Holmes.
I genuinely remember having it 143-142 for Larry, regardless of the judges. How would '78 Larry have performed against '73-'74 Ken?
Nice point, how about people compare Lewis against Ruddock, Golota & Grant... to Holmes against Cooney, Witherspoon & Truth Williams. You can give Holmes the Nielsen, McCall & Spinks II fights, but I think he lost Spinks I, Truth Williams & Witherspoon fights. So in my eyes, the best you can make Larry would be 70-5-0, rather than 73-2-0. Plus, you have to remember how many top contenders he avoided, & the two rematches he clearly owed two previously mentioned mistreated men.
Holmes was the better fighter & beats Lewis in a close one H2H both at their best. Holmes is a top 5 heavy on my list, Lewis is about 9th.
