there are 2 different kinds of broke the average ESB poster broke an former millionaire broke.... one means you never had anything and live week to week by pay check the other means you live off 200 grand a year as opposed to 25 million a year
the American tax system is all kinds of ****ed up... still i have limited sympathy for rich athletes that go broke Tyson should have been set for life
The IRS expects us to estimate our own tax bill, then file to see how close we are. If you get paid in a lump sum, you need to set funds aside, often for a year or more. For boxers, this is the worst possible system. Other athletes get paid throughout their season and can increase or decrease their savings as needed. Not boxers. I have read that Roy has/had IRS problems, which does not surprise me, but is often a far cry from actually being broke.
See: King, Don Tyson might have generated $300 million in earnings, but after King and the IRS took their cuts he wasn't left with anything close to that. More than enough to live on for generations, but not $300 million.
I wonder why it is though that certain fighters hang on to their money, make smart low risk investments, and live out the rest of their days comfortably. While others spend frivolously, blow a huge chunk on bad high risk investments, maybe another big chunk on drugs or just being the life of the party, and end up more broke then they were before they started boxing. Take Sugar Ray Robinson for example, he made great money for decades, and was a pioneer for fighters negotiating contracts with for a time radio conglomerates, and then the big TV networks. But by the time he won his 5th Middleweight title, he was fighting just to pay the IRS. And after he finally retired he hardly had a pot to **** in. Then there's Bernard Hopkins, who grew up poor just like Robinson. He even went to prison for a stretch for armed robbery. Although he was MW champion for years before he really was noticed on a world stage, so he really didn't start making the big money till the Trinidad fight and after. But Bernard and his family will never have to worry about money for the rest of their lives. It's just interesting...Anyways, I had no idea Roy Jones Jr. was broke. But honestly the way he spent his money it really would not surprise me if he was.
Nobody has still answered the question of how the "broke" RJJ presented(promoted) a fight card on national television just this last week? This is just being ignored while discussing a probably, unfounded rumor.
