when i first started training boxing I was around 148-150 had been a month so I started sparring and I was stronger and even faster than guys my size

...My trainer Merhav Mohar, you can go on youtube and check him out i think his record was 18-2(16 kos) as a pro also an isreali kickboxing champ, anyway he was like what are you gonna do when you can't overpower someone?

He forced me to spar this guy who was younger I was 21 he was 18 but had 20-25 pounds on me a lil less skilled but anyway we had to do 5 rounds and the first 3 rounds I could only throw a jab to the face and Just body shots, what he was teaching me was how to break down a larger guy, if i hit him with a power**** which I did a few times cuz of all the pressure he said I would have to spar him and I wanted no parts of that,

so the first round was hell, the 2nd was hard, by the 3rd round it felt like he was breaking down, by round 4-5 when I could throw power shots I was landing overhand rights, double and triple right hands, even landed a 4 punch combo that shocked me and I worked the kid eye was all swole and ****ed up it was a great learning experience....my point is if Hearns stuck to a plan like that and didnt let the warrior out to soon we wouldnt even know who Iran Barkely was but he wasnt in his prime anymore sadly.

 

Thanks for the story! Are you still training today? Must have been great working with such an experienced coach. I agree, if Tommy had stuck to his game plan, he would have taken Barkley out before the 8th round. For some reason, he opened up and looked for the quick knockout, the rest is history. How much do you think that war with Hagler took out of Tommy? Besides the fight with Leonard, when did we ever see Tommy hurt before Hagler? After that he looked more fragile to me

 

The war took alot out of him, as did the Leonard fight which was a longer affair...his power and skill set saw him through even though he wasnt at his physical peak anymore as far as punch resistance and stamina

I havent trained on the regular(in a gym) for a while, but I still do roadwork, shadowbox, the whole training routine on my own..... go to my friends dojo every chance I get, he is a second dan black belt in Shotokan Karate, and we train each other and our friends on the nuances of both disciplines, spar each other, right now we are working on developing our own martial art to evolve this MMA stuff...hope to run my own boxing gym one day...im 26 now but I will never feel right if I dont get some amatuer fights in, because my ultimate goal is to become a trainer, and your pupils respect you more when they see you have done it, not to say guys like Angelo Dundee arent great trainers but I've had other trainers that i knew more about the sport than they did.

 

Mayweather was beating legitimate world champions only 18 fights deep into his career.

Chavez resume is actually really underwhelming IMO considering how many fights he actually had. The Rosario fight was extremely impressive and by far his best performance ever. Great win, No Doubt. JLR. Meldrick Taylor was just starting to hit his stride and took him to school. Robbed, so badly, although you have to respect Chavez for going all out to get that stoppage until the last second. Camacho as stated, was fairly past it. Other wins over Juan LaPorte (iron chin), Ruben Castillo, Uncle Roger. Good contenders/titlists, not exactly ATG comp.

I still give Chavez the edge based on activity alone, but it's not so ridiculous. MVC just puts it in a way that is going to bring Floyd even more hate and disregard.

He took a lot of punishment from Hagler before he went down! In rounds 6 and 7 against Leonard he survived purely on guts! I think that war took a lot out of Hagler as well, he lost a lot in terms of motivation.

How much do you enjoy MMA compared to just boxing? What kind of style are you trying to develop? Good luck with your amateur bouts, if you feel confident to spar any amateur at a local gym, you're ready for a bout

 

some people actually think LaPorte beat him...because of the win streak his status is overrated because of activity alone is unjust....17 out of Mayweathers 42 fights were against world champions where as Chavez fought maybe 20 fights against world champions lost some and had over 100 fights

 

I know right been past ready for a sanctioned am fight...I enjoy certain MMA fighters not the sport as a whole...trying to develop a style combining incorporating the hands, footwork, defensive skills and countering of boxing, sound wrestling for takedowns and take down defense, kicks of Shotokan and the basics of BJJ to have some skill to submit, mostly defend against BJJ cuz honestly we are about hitting not getting hit and apprehending someone with hits not sqerming around the mat like females

 

If someone wanted to get into MMA, which discipline would you recommend taking up first?

 

Muay Thai, Kenpo or Karate....hands or feet are gonna land first before you can grab or shoot in shot in, wresting is all about wrist control, timing the shot and getting at a right distance, by the time you are close enough, here comes a punch kick or knee and its night nite

Floyd got a gift FIXED win by DelaHoya (Delahoya vs Mayweather was a FIXED FIGHT), so that Delahoya would co-promote him to future fights.

Floyd ducked Antonio Margarito many times.
Chavez NEVER ducked anyone.

Whitaker ran and would not put up a fight.
In Texas, you either put up or shut up.
