I think the Ring has enough integrity to use good judgement to prevent unworthy fighters becoming Ring champ. In some cases this will work to our advantage. The Ring champ is theoretically the people's champion and that sort of position doesn't require strict rules to legitimise. I can see the logic of more flexible rules preventing a division having a vacant champion for too long. If one guy is deemed unworthy of the Ring belt then that should provide incentive for the other fighters to expose them

I don't. The magazine is owned by a large boxing promoter. These new rules just make it easier for them to position their guys to get the Ring belt. These rules are not concrete enough. They now have too much leadway to decide who gets to fight for the Ring belt. They're closing the gap between themselves and the sanctioning bodies.

Agreed. The Ring has a vested interest in what is printed and loses credibility. It's just like the government owning NPR; of course they are going to say what the government wants said. Journalism, in all it's forms, has gone down the toilet in our lifetimes.

Team Elite and the rest of The Ring's critics have been fully vindicated after tirelessly denouncing the once "Bible Of Boxing" as now being nothing more than a spurious, sleazy comic book :deal.

    Yep.

    Quote:

“We believe we’ve come up with a new policy that will... hopefully motivate the best to fight the best...."

    BUT THEN:

Championship vacancies can be filled in the following two ways:

    2. If the Nos. 1 and 2 contenders choose not to fight one another and either of them fights No. 3, No. 4 or No. 5, the winner may be awarded THE RING belt."

SAY WHAT ??? The champ can duck the top 4 contenders, but retain his belt as long as he fights #5? (within 18 months, no less) Do I have to explain how these two statements conflict?
    ----------

You can easily rip-apart the rest of their new policy, but why even bother?

I hope you mean The Ring's lineages mean less now. Even before these dumb rule changes, true lineal champions were not equivalent to Ring champions, as best evidenced by Michalczewski and Jones. They've gone hand in hand for the most part, but this should completely separate the two.
