Mayweather's ability would easily attract boxing fans but the reason behind the big support in England should be the Hatton fight. Even since both were at 140 and they were rumored to fight. That lasted for a long time before they finally met and the longer it lasted the more popular Mayweather became as a potential foe to Hatton who was getting more and more attention/love/support each fight. Hatton's loss would definitely leave a lot of admirers and haters and the result is obvious today.

Amir Khan represented England in the olympics and still does, there's not much more to be said beyond that. The British are loyal towards their stars, always been.

I would assume based on that post that you're probably hinting Hatton got support simply based on being British. Hatton was a good, world class entertaining fighter who took on all comers, his support was easily justified. That can't be denied.

Mayweather absolutely dismissed Hatton until Hatton ko`d Castillo and basically slagged him off immedietely afterwards. He claimed that Hatton was avoiding him at lightwelterweight so he thought,**** you.Hatton was well lucky to get him tbh.It was the Castillo ko that got the fight(plus his gobbing off after).

I'm not denying this. But the cult following that came from his home base was definitely based on nationality. They flew over in droves for his fight against Floyd. No entertaining world class fighter of any other nationality has gotten that kind of support from the Brits.

Mind you Khan is no Hatton in skills or personality. But the point stands that in Britain he is sure to have many fans who like him because of his nationality rather than his fighting ability.

English are a strange breed. They recognize real. Unlike America as long as you perform and arent fake they like you no matter what race, creed or color you are.

I mean, Prince Naz, Hatton, Bruno, Eubanks, ect widely different guys from different backgrounds, but they were loved because they were real. Lewis, Calzaghe, Khan not so much.

See, that's messed up! Not the fact they would support a black dude, but all because of where Amir's parents come from?

One of the reasons that I initially started following Amir is because he of his ****stani roots, and my ties with ****stan. . . The country I lived, and loved as a child. . . Of course that just got me to start following him, I like him so much because of his exciting, and unique style that is based on probably the best raw speed in boxing. . .

Amir doesn't even try to play on his ****stani roots, though? You see how most Mexican-Americans play HEAVILY on their Mexican heritage. . . Not that there's anything wrong with that, because Mexican boxing is important to boxing as a whole. . . But Amir could easily give the middle finger to England saying "I ain't even English"! Yet he ALWAYS honors his Northern English roots. . .

I never support fighters just because they are from the same place as me, I suport fighters because I like them as fighters.

As much as I don`t like fmj for not making the pac fight, it would be a massive injustice for someone of the level of Khan to be the 1st to beat fmj, I`d probably want fmj to win vs Khan.

Are you serious? England LOVES Lewis. . At most I've talked to. . . He's without a doubt the best English boxer of all time. . . .

And Calzaghe is from Wales, and he is GOD there. . . He's liked pretty well in England too. . . You don't see NEARLY the hate that Khan gets from his countrymen like they get. . .

I think all boxing fans recognize real talent, and at the deepest level of, country of origin doesn't have that big of a role in who they like, and root for. .

People like to say the Brits don't support Khan because he's ****stani... That's bull****.

During the Olympics, I remember being in pubs & clubs, & everyone was cheering on Khan. Fast forward a few years, the same people, in the same pubs & clubs are booing him.. Why? Because Khan is a ****!

Everyone hated Gary Neville, as we assumed he was a ****. As it turns out, he's the ****ing bollox.... Khan is the opposite.

Yeah, it's about the same in all countries when it comes to just liking some athletes because of nationality. . .

I think this applies to the common fan, for the most part. .

Most posters here are hardcore fans, and country notwithstanding, we all pretty much recognize real talent, and support all kinds of different boxers. I don't necessarily band wagon jump, and simply root for fighters who are the best (although I praise them, and recognize). . . I like guys not only based on skills, but also unique, and entertaining styles. . .

But it would definitely be a first for a boxer to have more support from the fans of THE OTHER GUY's country. . .

Can you give me examples of how he is a ****?

I know a lot of English posters have said "he doesn't care about his fans", "he thinks he's better than his fans", "he's too cocky", etc. . .

Yet nobody can cite specific examples? What is something he did, or said?

I've heard nothing but praise from younger fighters who always say how helpful, and supportive he is. . He lets them use his gym, donates money to the olympic youth teams, donates money to charity. . . Talks to his fans on twitter. . I mean, what is wrong with the guy? What GREAT boxer isn't a little bit cocky (or really just confident).

He's an idiot, always coming out with stupid comments. He is delusional & I don't like the way he carries himself.

Plus he's supposed to be a proper ***** away from the cameras. I've heard plenty of stories about him & his mates.

Let's be honest, there's hardly anything likeable about team Khan.
