when he was tired, i found this very odd, it seems like when he's more defensive minded he's able to slip majority of punches even fast ones like from mayweather.

I find it odd he tends to do more blocking with his gloves rather than slip punches. He made it look quite fancy out there, my friends were pretty amazed and thought he came out of a matrix movie. Although they didnt understand how he kept missing because of floyds shoulder roll technique.

Did miguel have potential to be a pretty good defensive fighter if he was trained by diaz from the start?

He can continue making small improvements that go a long way. He's already got a decent defense.

His last two bouts, his defense has been the best it has ever been IMO, up against differing styles in Margarito (the relentless "boxer") and Mayweather (the accurate sniper). Diaz is a top coach.

To be honest, up until the body shot that slowed Floyd down a bit, Pretty was tagging Cotto almost at will. Sure his defense improved, but like Canelo, he only reacts to punches he anticipates, those coming from an awkward angle, timed perfectly or thrown when energy level is low, get through with full impact. It's the lack of elite reflexes, skills and experience can only compensate so much. But I like this improved Cotto.

Disagree somewhat. Mayweather wasn't really tagging him at will, Cotto's tight defense impressed me on second viewing, his glove positioning has improved under Diaz. He was doing a good job at partially blocking most shots from Mayweather, and his parrying was effective aswell. When Mayweather initiated a defensive reaction out of Cotto, this is when Mayweather landed clean shots.

His upper body movement to make Mayweather miss badly at the end of a couple of the middle rounds was very impressive to see.
