Primo Carnera vs Francesco Damiani

damiani was under-rated i thought...thats all i have to add

 

actually, canera was better than most of the books suggest

 

would put damiani on the over. good long jab with a solid defence and a good boxing brain. the mercer ko was almost a freakish occurrence and by the mid 90's he was already old. also his tendency to throw his hooks palm first and then just flaisl with them is a bit worrysome for a big right hand puncher like carnera

carnera was dangerous in a era of smaller men (no judging eras badly) but damiani has fought men just as tall if not broader than him. so it isnt really a shock or a surprise to fran.



my money would be with damiani. a great amateur a good pro who did what he wanted to do in the sport. the fear factor of primo's hieght and weight i think is diminshed and a good technician like damiani has the tools to disrupt and win.

 

This is a mismatch.

Whatever his limitations, Carnera was a world class heavyweight who beat other world class heavyweights.

He was also prety consistent up to the level of his A game, so an upset is unlikley.

 

Depends on how many of Damiani's relatives the mob threatens before the fight. :thumbsup

 

Not terribly impressed with either fighter to be truthful, but Primo has the size and the credentials, so I'll give him the edge.

 

"World Class" is not a constant, especially in the heavyweight division.

I think Damiani has the guile, size, speed and craft to take a decision here.

 

He isn't even as big as Carnera.

Primo legitimately decisioned Loughran, one of the absolute most skilled boxers who has ever lived. Tommy took the measure of big opponents taller than Carnera, like Campolo and Impellittiere. Primo wore him down over Loughran's own preferred distance.

This thread specifies the championship distance. In his successful title defenses, Primo took the measure of two opponents who were highly accomplished in that situation. Uzcudun had defeated Max Baer over 20 (on youtube) went the championship limit in just his 11th match, and posted three victories over 15 rounds.

Carnera-Impellittiere has been on youtube. Primo turned the fight when he screwed up Ray with a left hook. We've all seen the right uppercut he dethroned Sharkey with, and those who watched Carnera-Sharkey II from beginning to end have seen how he battered Jack from pillar to post from the outset.

Primo's combination of strength and stamina, combined with some decent power and effective use of reach, would be too much for a cutie like Damiani to weather for 15 rounds well enough to win. I think Francesco would be completely worn out by a brutally extended mauling and battering.

why, over the years, has the history books not give him enough credit ?

 

Carnera was actualy a realy good technician.

He was good at range, good on the inside, and good in the zone between.

Frankly, he is one of the better technical boxers of all the superheavyweights, up to this day.

 

He's big enough, bigger than Schaff or Loughran or the Basque whose name I can never spell correctly... Uzcudan or Uzcudun...

I agree with your position on Carnera beating Damiani. But taller or not, constantly mentioning Ray Impellittiere is not the vehicle by which I'd use to construct my argument. He was a mother ****ing diaper stain, who Damiani and probably James Quick Tillis would have ass-raped with a fist dipped in glass shards and resin.
